For anyone who's built their own boat....

Absolutely. Gravity working for you instead of against.

Probably 2 coats of high build epoxy primer then two of Interprotect 2000e followed by a hard bottom paint. Sides will be done after it's flipped.

Yo Rick.
Is there a local place to buy paper for that durablock?..
King Edward doesn't sell it...

There's a couple other parts stores in town Wayne. Try them. If not you can come and get some more.

I've been facinated watching this project. But I do have a question - with all the layers of fiberglass and doing all this work by hand (vs spraying into a mold) are you concerned about the fibergass being un-even and more importantly the weight of the boat. If could come to Canada, I would come hang out for a weekend and watch.

Rick congratulations on your progress thus far. Don't know if you noticed but next Saturday (June 29th) marks the third anniversary of your first post.
Well done..and I certainly admire your skill and tenacity.

Hi Bill

I am a little concerned. If I had lots of extra hands I would have done all the layers at once. I'm hope that taking my time now and sanding out all the bumps and filling the hollows will pay off with a decent finish to the sides. The bottom and keel I'm not too worried about. Weight isn't too much of a factor. It should end up right around the weight the designer specified. I'm using the same total weight of glass as per specs just different types.

Thanks for looking in.

Hi Norman

Yeah I know. Time flies! I've lost about 10 months with a busted up knee. Apparently that can't be fixed with surgery so I just have to tough it out.

It took my friend Peter 9 years to build his 31' Bolger. I'm aiming for 6! Don't hold me to that though! ;-)

Hi Rick.

Do you have a rough date of when you anticipate flipping the hull?

Thanks,
--Rick

The one downside with working with epoxy resin is that you're at the mercy of the air temperature. The only choice you get is picking the hardner. It has to be mixed at a specified ratio. On a hot day: getting it mixed, onto the fiberglass to wet it out, then to work it must have been a chore. Having more bodies and hands would be a major plus only if everyone knew exactly what their role was and the consequences of them not fulfilling it. Sort of like Chef Ramsay on Hell's Kitchen; each individual has to perform in a timely manner for success.

Hey Rick

No specific date. If I can get the hull glassed and the bottom painted this year I'd be happy. If there's time maybe I could flip it over but I'm not going to rush it. I've made too many mistakes trying to rush things. As my buddy Peter always tells me 'it ain't a race'.

Thanks for looking in.

You're absolutely right. On a project this size I think four guys would have been ideal. One rolling on the goop, one applying the peel ply and one squeegeeing and the other guy mixing. And, as you say, they all have to work in concert. Unfortunately I don't have any buddies left that are capable of helping. One had a stroke and the other an aneurism so I'm pretty much on my own. There are a couple of kids around that I can pay to help but mixing and running epoxy to me is about all they can do.

One thing I did do was invest in a 'Sticky Stuff' dispenser. This piece of kit meters and mixes the epoxy in correct proportions. All you have to do is pump it out.

As long as you keep the hoppers filled you won't have any problems with mixing ratios etc. It was a bit expensive but a good investment in the long run.

Thanks for checking out our project.

I think I'm loosin' it here! I can't get this tune out of my head! :help:

I'm sandin' in the rain
Just sandin' in the rain
What a glorious feelin'
I'm hap hap happy again
I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for fairin' fun
With a happy refrain
I'm just sandin', sandin' in the rain

Oh God, someone help me please!

Ya think? :-)

I think it was just low blood sugar before lunch! I'm fine now. I really really am ok now! Yup! ;-)

I knew I had it somewhere. Just couldn't put my finger on it!

Ever have one of those moments when you're frustrated looking for something and just have to clean out the entire shed? Yup, that was today!

Look what I found!

Hadn't seen the engine in a couple of years it was covered with stuff. Put the strongbar on it and turned it over a dozen times or so.

Here's the stuff! Got Glass?

Things are a little more orderly now. Ordering more epoxy & glass today. Should be back to boat building next week. I think my sander miss's me!

I just updated our Blog and am too lazy to post it here. So if you're interested, or having a hard time getting to sleep you can read it here....
