Anyone who thinks is should be against the rules to post links to ones own blogger blog, with ads turned on, that at a max makes a couple of cents a day, needs to get with the times. There is not a site of the internet that doesn't have this kind of advertising. So no one can link to anywhere. Don't link to news sites, don't link to youtube videos, and don't link to your own content.
People also pay to host content in places that provide a service, ease of posting and storage space. The cost of an anchor here provides no technical service, besides access to a private section to a forum. Then you want people to duplicate thier effort and put their content in here instead of a link, where it provides little service to do so, or the service is ancient in terms of web services. The cost of these services people want to link to, rarely make money enough to cover the cost of that service through ads. For example, I'm sure Rick's blogger ads do not make him enough to cover the photobucket account he pays for to host images to post here.
IMO the "laws" here need to change. Instead of trying to hog content to this site, it needs to open up, or be lost in the internet of 10-15 years ago. Ads are here, deal with it.

The vitality of this site comes from interaction of a large number of competent people answering and debating boating issues. To me a few ads are secondary. Moving the discussion off the site to your own private blog reduces the feedback and support available as well as reducing the activity on the site. IMO the blogger and the site loose.
There is a big difference between a forum and blog. If you want to brag about your activities blog away. If you have a question who will answer on your blog?.

Shel, the cost of just the hosting services and the bandwidth is over $300 a month. The subscription cost (anchor) is designed to help offset that cost - period. However, it also gives an anchored user the ability to private message and email, as well as access to "not boating related" forums. It has been, and will continue to be, a voluntary "donation" for the sole purpose of keeping this forum on line. I can't afford to absorb the cost myself.
As far as Knotty is concerned, this post ran for a very long time without a problem. I let the occasional link slide because I understand the time that duplicating the effort required. It wasn't until every single post contained a link to the blog as well as every photo also having the URL of the blog in big bold letters pasted on it that I asked that the references be minimized. Again, the few rules we do have here were not arbitrary but developed and approved by the members at the time.

Yeah that would be nice. I ve been checking his blog once in a while. I don’t know where he gets the motivation to deal with the crazy weather and limited number of workable months
