Besides, green hides the leaks better. ;)

Beautiful thing about Detroits - long as they keep leaking, you know they're not out of oil!

That's like the old adage about Harley's being so expensive. They're so expensive because they come with newspaper and kitty litter.

Plus if you ever run out of fuel you can run on bilge oil for a long time.

Good to see capt Bill supervising another rebuild. You know it will turn out well.

Bill, thanks for taking the time to post the pics and details. Looks like a great project, I will be following this one. I know I will have "made it" if I ever own a boat with stabilizers!

How do stabilizers work and what is the reason to have it?
Jim

OK, the boat goes back in the water at 8:30 am tomorrow. Here are some new pictures of the work done so far.

New PSS dripless packing glands and water feed hoses are in. Along with all new thurhulls. As well as a new pump and strainer for the NAIAD cooling pump.

This photo shows just how thick the hull is near the keel/engine beds area. And at the transom. The core on the left is from the bottom and the one on the right is from the transom.

New 6 square foot NAIAD fin compared to the original 4.5 one.

One of the two new UW lights.

Put in all new thruhull screens and shoes.

Before -

After - (still some paint touch up to do)

I thought I'd try this on the props.

Thinking about redesigning the lower helm gauge panel so we can put these two monitors in the end panels. I'd widen the two end panels and move most of the gauges in those panels to a new custom center panel. While moving a few of the non-engine related gauges to the overhead panels.

This is the Raymarine package we got off Craig's List locally.

After the boat goes in the water tomorrow and if all goes well, it will be moved to it's new home dock up the North fork of the New River here in Ft. Lauderdale. Work will come to an end for a while. Coincidentally both myself and the guy who has been working with me go on vacation at the same time for a couple of weeks. So no work will go on for a bit.

Once we are back the next projects will be fixing the water pumps on the genset so we can get it running so we can see why it's smoking so much. As well as having the stbd main engines starter rebuilt.

More pictures and updates to come.

Bill - You guys are doing a fantastic job. Keep the pictures and updates coming. BTW, how was the bottom? I had it barrier coated several years ago. I wondered how it held up after being in the water for 4 years straight. Also, were the shafts scored at all from being seized.

What a great project!

What kind of paint did you use in the engine room?

What a mind-boggling amount of work in a short period of time! Beautiful, too.

Hey Steve. The bottom was great. There were only two very small areas of what sounded like de-lamination to us when the surveyer was sounding the bottom with a hammer. We elected to let those go till the next haul out.

There was wear on the shafts but it was from years of use not the seizing of the packing. They only needed minor straightening. The stbd engine was very close to true in alignment. While the port had to be raised up some. We are considering replacing the engine mounts in the future.

They are 26 years old after all. :-)

We used Interlux Perfection two part poly paint. In Snow White.

Thanks Nancy.
We tried to move along as fast as possible and concentrate on the things that would keep us from going back in the water the longest. But we did do some extra things like have both engines raw water pumps rebuilt and their charge air coolers cleaned, tested and service while we were at it. Along with some extra cleaning and painting in the bilge areas that just made sense due to access at the time.

More to come. :-)

Somehow I had missed the biggest update to this thread.... Congrats bill and great job to date...

Beautiful work on a worthy vessel. A few shots from her glory days circa 2008...

I know of only one person that would have those nostalgic pictures, and he is a Soggy Dog. :-)

I would love to hear more about this project as well!

Looks like he did not pay the Photobucket ransom and his pics have been removed.
