"So much sea ice in Antarctica that a research vessel gets stuck, in summer!"

Posted on December 26, 2013 by Anthony Watts

"It is summer in the southern hemisphere and yet there is still signifiicantly above normal amounts of sea ice present as the passengers and crew of one tour ship discovered. The icebreakers Xue Long and Aurora Australis, and a French research vessel Astrolabe are cruising towards the Akademik Shokalskiy at full throttle for rescue. Photos and maps follow.

PR from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Dec 25th, 2013:

Search and rescue of passenger vessel trapped in ice underway

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is coordinating a search and rescue for a Russian passenger ship beset by ice approximately 1500 nautical miles south of Hobart.

AMSA's Rescue Coordination Centre Australia (RCC Australia) was contacted by the Falmouth Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in the United Kingdom on Christmas morning.

The Falmouth MRCC received a distress message via satellite from a Russian flagged vessel, MV Akademik Shokalskiy, with 74 people about 7.20am (AEDT).

The ship is in the Australian Search and Rescue region, 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont D'Urville.

RCC Australia assumed coordination of the incident and issued a broadcast to icebreaking vessels in the area.

Three ships with icebreaking capability have responded, including the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) vessel Aurora Australis, and are now en route to the area.

The closest vessels are at least two days sailing time away."

Lets not joke about Global warming it is a joke but it is costing us a bunch of money.

Well, fair is fair.

http://www.weather.com/news/science...lobal-temperature-was-hottest-record-20131217

The record cold temps at the south end of the globe are noted.

The problem with Global Warming is this:

If it is a natural phenomenon that can not be stopped by our actions, then we will waste billions of dollars trying to stop it, for nothing.

But, if it is a a man-made phenomenon, and can be slowed down, and we do nothing, then hello hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, droughts, super storms, etc.

Mother Nature does not care whether or not you believe in Her, and she can be a real bitch sometimes.

Personally, I say let's do nothing and let nature take its course. I'm old enough that I probably won't have to live with the consequences of that decision. I'm sure the next generations will figure something out. Or not. It will be up to them to live with the consequences of today's decisions.

Unfortunately the entire issue has been clouded by lack of focus, excessive political influence and too many folk seeking the accolades of their esteemed (half-ass) academic colleagues. You historians will note a similiar situation took place in the Middle Ages and often involved Papal authorities. Those folk had a heck of a lot of trouble with Heavenly Bodies.

This link provides webcam pictures from the bow, stern, and port of the Australian Ice breaker that is steaming to rescue the stranded Russian ship. Not a pretty picture since the ice breaker Aurora was recently stranded for three weeks.

Two other icebreakers have also backed off due to ice being too thick.

MarcelR, good point.

FYI, There is a disagreement in the science community about November 2013 being the warmest on Record since all the temperature data sources do not confirm the claim, especially the Satellite data from UAH. See below:

"Lots of clima-hullaballo this week in the media thanks NOAA and this announcement in NOAA’s “State of the Climate” report seen here: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/"

They state:

"The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for November 2013 was record highest for the 134-year period of record, at 0.78°C (1.40°F) above the 20th century average of 12.9°C (55.2°F)."

"Much of the global “record highest” claim hinges on this one point about Russia:"
see
http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/sotc_russia_nov2013.png

"But, according to satellite temperatures, the ranking claimed by NCDC isn’t anywhere near to “record warmest”. Dr. John Christy gives these values for the satellite data sources of global temperature and their ranks:"

#9726;UAH Nov 2013 9th warmest Nov (0.20 C cooler than warmest Nov.)
#9726;RSS Nov 2013 16th warmest Nov (0.22 C cooler than warmest Nov.)

"And, when we look at the UAH map of the world, while Russia was certainly warmer, it wasn’t as warm as NCDC makes it to be."

The Weather Channel is known to be a strong advocate of Global Warming and Climate change, so one needs to be skeptical about many of their claims. Even the founder of the weather channel (who sold it)is a strong critic of their positions.("In January 2010, Coleman produced a special report for KUSI-TV, entitled Global Warming: The Other Side, in which he forwards his view on global warming as a scam, and lays out what he believes to be evidence of a deliberate manipulation of world temperature data by NASA and others.)

For a complete analysis of the claim go to this URL:

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/12/...al-november-2013-temperature-please-stand-up/

There are significant differences in opinion on the global warming subject, one needs to study both sides to get a complete picture and draw a conclusion. There are a lot of exaggerated claims out there and one needs to consider the motive.

Global warming may or may not be caused by the actions of mankind (I believe it is NOT). But what is undeniable is that the socialists, Marxists and progressives of the world are using it in an attempt for massive redistribution of wealth and centralized control of the world economy.

Jim, You may not believe this....but for once we are in complete agreement.

Rtribble, since you are so concerned with income inequality, I assume you are sharing your 36 foot Carver yacht with those less fortunate who can't afford a pleasure boat?

From the news reports I've been watching, it doesn't seem like the passengers are all that worried about being rescued. In fact, it looks like they're having fun!

Keep whistling, you're not past the graveyard, yet.

If it is natural, you cannot stop it, if it is man made, you still cannot stop it (any more than you could stop dinosaurs from farting). The belief that you can make changes to the climate is the height of inflated self importance.

"The belief that you can make changes to the climate is the height of inflated self importance."

Agree, but I would have said, "The belief that you can make changes to the climate is the height of inflated self importance hubris."

We have such a wonderful language. I like to use the right word whenever applicable... ;)

For those who haven't heard the word, here is a convenient link for hubris.

A much larger ice-capable ship being launched than that Alaskan research vessel discussed in a recent thread. USCGC HEALY is classed as a "medium" icebreaker. The "Polar Class" are the big boys, "heavy" icebreakers, approaching end of service life and too expensive to keep running much longer. Polar Class replaced older breakers like GLACIER and the "Wind" class. Icebreaking capability to around 20-ft thickness.

UPDATE
Below is the web cam from the Aurora ice breaker that has just rescued many of the global warming scientists from the stranded Russian ship. Ironically they went to the Antarctic to study how the sea ice is melting. Reportedly the ship became stranded when the "scientists" refused to follow the Captains orders to immediately return to the ship as the weather was worsening.
The crew was left on the stranded Russian Ship.

Reportedly the icebreaker is moving at 1/4 knot in heavy ice toward open sea that is not in the horizon. I don't know much about icebreakers, but that is uncomfortably slow for me given the consequences should it also become stranded.

For a complete story go to: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2014/01/...l-fighting-heavy-sea-ice-to-reach-open-water/

Looks like the Chinese ship is having problems and may become iced in herself.

Just curious - who pays when a rescue ship needs rescueing? These idiot "scientists"?

Just what the hell where they going to study. The difference between ice and water? They certainly weren't going to study steam. Or did they thing AGW causes steam in Antarctica?

What a total crock of c**p.

Global warming is real like it or not.
The naysayers look at things from a day to day basis and try to confirm their position based on small events.
This is totally wrong. The warming trend is measured over a period of years not days, weeks or months.
Another thing that helps support the naysayers argument is every time we have an exceptionally warm trend in a winter (for a few weeks or so) they use that as evidence that global warming don't exist. Again, global warming is based on long term trends. Another thing to not about climate change is extremes in weather. Summers are getting warmer as are winters. However, within the season there is more dramatic weather events than before in human recorded history.
I guess there is no convincing the naysayers. They know nothing about Galcier National Park, the artic Ice and and receding glaciers all over the world.
There are billions od homes, automobiles and factories worldwide throwing off tremendous amounts of heat everyday and have been for the couple of hundred years. If this won't convince you nothing will.
