Haverstraw FYI

All of the above are great destinations. Some of the wonders of the Hudson River!!!

BTW what's the best way to visit Cornetta's Restaurant (assuming it is a desirable place to visit - your thoughts) ???

Rob, we have a 30 ft maxum. I gave a call up there and they said i would have my choice of slips and tie up. Hoping it isn't bs.

That would probably be Green or Blue dock. There were a few slips available last year on those docks. One good thing also with Haverstraw is there is life on the docks. So if its nasty and windy and you are stuck at the dock there are usually people around hanging out. Let me know how you make out.

Kingston is a great destination and we go at least once a year. Agreed about the restaurants and dinking.

We went there this summer for dinner one night. We were able to get in and out without a problem. A bigger boat may have issues with the depth, but I was fine.

The food was very good and the staff was great. The owner or manager was very nice and was happy to see us coming in.

How much is Haverstraw per foot? Any hidden fees?

I'll give my two cents...we love Kingston. We finally did an "adults only" (can it Walter) trip at the end of the summer and it was great. For that, we stayed at the town docks, had an awesome dinner, music afterward and brunch in the morning. Normally though, we prefer RYB with it's pool, snack bar and little playground. With the dink, it's a short trip across the creek to the center of town where the restaurants (and museum) are.

As far as marinas go, Catskill is definitely better than RYB (IMHO). However, there's not much to do outside the marina and it's quite a bit up river so we didn't make it there this summer.

I agree with Rob, the people at cornettas are great. If I were in the area I would stop by for a huge burger and a few drinks at the outside patio. It wouldn't be a destination. But the depth is what got me one too many times last season. The great part about that area is that if cornettas is full (they have limited transient space) then Stripers or the Washington Irving Yacht Club is right across the river.

Thanks, guys! We'll have to add it to our list...

Boating Rob & Apperino -

I'm in Haverstraw on the red docks. I have two boys - 5 & 4 yrs old by this summer. We should get together / raft up etc. Send me an e-mail with phone numbers. I'll be heading up there soon to secure my slip and will let you know where we're located.

The only political agenda I carry is that I'm strongly against Heineken. All other beers are welcome aboard!!!

... a much better hang than Haverstraw or Catskill IMHO. While Catskill has a couple of nice marinas, walking through town to the only restaurant is no picnic.

Kingston is terrific, but don't rule out a visit to Catskill - the town is enjoying a major renaissance. The village is right around the corner from the Catskill Marina which is peaceful and park-like, very transient-friendly with nice people, a pool and good, clean facilities. Town's a longer walk from Hop-O-Nose Marina, which has a generally well-liked restaurant. There are now a variety of good eats in town, from the terrific Italian spot to Sushi to Thai among traditional fare - even a cool coffee joint. It's worth a try.

How is the water depths at the Catskill Marina? My draft is 4.5' so many places low tide even high tides are too skinny

You will have no depth issues in the creek, even at dead-low tide. It's considered a 10' minimum. Catskill Marina has a few full-time 50'+ boats and much larger boats frequently stop there on their way up or down river. It should be a given, but be sure to keep the green buoy to port when entering the creek as there is no water (to speak of) on the other side.

Capt. Art;

You have to pay attention as you enter Catskill Creek, but as long as you follow the markers once you have cleared the mouth of the creek you have clear sailing to Catskill Marina.

It is one of our favorite get-a-ways.

I can't recommend Google Earth for that creek since it looks like it is completely shoaled up. I haven't heard any stories about the creek but watch the markers. It's been a while since we stayed there.

Just follow the markers and you are OK, Pleny of water in channel...Plenty at the slips as well...Current can be strong after a heavy rain storm. As someone mentioned, only have to make sure you dont pass the one light house on the wrong side. Check the charts for it, I dont remeber the number or name but its a couple miles before the creek entrance....

Going up the Hudson is my favorite ride. No other local trip within 150 miles is so enjoyable. Instead of looking at just endless water or beach shore you really get an up close view of the majestic cliffs, NY Skyline & fantastic natural ever changing scenery on both sides as you travel. The deep water is also a big plus as you don't have to watch every mile you go. Anyone who never made this ride is missing a major boating experience. Just mu .02
