Headed To Bahamas

Changed plan. Took a look this morning, thought better of it, staying put. 4' to 6' for my little boat is a bit much for my tired, old, fat body to handle.

Randy, I haven't been keeping it by RPM or anything, just distance vs gallons. So far I have traveled a total of 496 miles and averaged 2.5 SMPG total.

I can tell you that cruising at 3000 RPM's I see 14-15 kts and get 2.2 SMPG average.

Trolling at 1500 RPM's I see 6-6.5 KTS and get 5-5.5 SMPG average.

But, even that is edgy because of the amount of weight I am carrying. My friend brought enough canned food to feed the Chinese army and LOTS of gear. He's never done nay long distance cruising so, as a result, I'm about twice as heavy as I should be. :)

Good call.

At about $800 per engine for my boat, nah, I can live without them. :)

How far I've traveled divided by the number of gallons to fill up works just fine.

Got a bit of a hole. Looks pretty good except for the last couple of miles.

Upping anchor, out of here!

Back here in September.

good luck on the crossing, it's been windy for the past few days and even this morning here in Miami... ENE isn't the best. If your friend needs treatment, flying out may be the best option.

i've never seen any issue with the entrance to BIM with easterly winds, even with the tide. it's really westerlies that can be a HUGE issue there. with easterlies and tide you may get a light chop but nothing bad

good luck!

He should be halfway or so by now. Looks like he forgot to turn his SPOT on though.

I'm showing ESE from a number of sources (BuoyWeather & IMap), so that's better than ENE for sure.
Looks like he's got 3 footers to deal with.

I was wondering if it was laying down enough to run. I'll bet he winds up working the wheel a bit but the weather is certainly not improving after today. Is this November or June for crying out loud?

Back on this US of A. Actually not too bad. Saw a hole in the wather just long enough to punch through. Wind was out of the east and east southeast at, probably, 10 to 12. Seas were 2' to 3' with an occasional 4 and a bit of chop on top. Had to work the wheel fairly constantly but, all in all, not that bad.

Came into Port Everglades and up the ICW to North Palm Beach where we'll spend the night and seek out a world class cheese burger.

My friend will fly home from Palm Beach Airport in the morning and I will proceed northward towards home port. Will reload, spend a bit of time with the wife and head out again early August weather permitting.

...So, we stopped and took a dip in 2400' blue water. Spooky! :)

How did you get back on the boat with the dinghy on the swim platform?

Undid the dink, laid it flat on the water (Weaver Snap Davits)and used it for a diving board and boarding deck. Raised it back up, secured it and proceeded on our way. :)

Yeah, sorry about that. I turned it on but the battery was crapped out and I didn't realize it.

Glad to hear you made it ok. So 2-3 on your boat isn't so bad after all? How far apart were the waves? We had them at 3-4 seconds on the way back this year.

LOL, I was so busy with the wheel I didn't pay attention to spacing. They were pretty close so I had ot keep ahead of the boat. "Surfing" down the side of one swell though I did hit 22 KTS. But I was worried about it digging in at the bottom and rolling left or right so I REALLY got up on the wheel for that one. :)

But, as I said, all in all it wasn't all that bad. My little 28 handled it just fine. It's my tired old 63 y/o back that took the beating :)

I may be (only) 56 but I know it well! Two compressed disks. Once you get into the rythm and lock down into the seat it isn't so bad.
Anyway, we (I mostly) are looking to launch in Sept.. Due to all the work I am anticipating an early start is in the offing to get her blown out before we head over.

Edit:
I just remembered that when we came into Ft. Lauderdale we were surfing in also. In fact the oil pressure guages were rocking with the waves. We'd surf down one and the pressure would jump up even tho the engines were not revving anymore. Part of the reason we are launching early. Must be crud in the pan hitting the regulators.

You two need to get catamarans to save your backs. It sounds like we all did the same sloppy conditions this year, but we never pounded once. Granted, the ride "down" a few swells got a bit exciting, but there was never an impact.

Kurt it's not pounding it's the sharp rolling since we're up higher. I usually have to keep one foot up on the helm somewhere to push off a bit. That light pressure with my foot pushes me into the chair and takes up the slop in the mating surfaces of the chair/pole which I've never been able to correct.
If we were only a couple of feet off the water like some other people it wouldn't be so bad [:P]

Back home.

Will be leaving mid August to go back. Unless there's a couple of hurricanes lurking about.

Next trip I'll be alone so I can stay as long as I friggin' want to. :)

Better luck next time. We spent all Winter over there and we were lucky we had a few weekends we could cash in on. The weather is really funky.

This entire year has been windy there. We always figured May to be the "safe" month. But we still had some winds to deal with (and north ones at that).
