Hey guy,

I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment. Due to a job, I was forced to move upstate, quite suddenly, about 400 miles away. I still have my waterfront house in Amity Harbor, and my boat is still in the water. I planned on taking care of it in a week or two, but I checked the weather, and it's going to be getting cold! I need someone to haul, via crane, the boat, and winterize, or just winterize it in the water. I've made a few phone calls, and have not had much luck. What makes this more difficult is the fact that I don't know where the keys are. I've jumped the ignition switch before to start it, but I don't know if a marine mechanic would feel comfortable doing that.

Could you recommend someone that does in water winterizations? Or, a boat hauler with a crane? Or, if you would like to make some extra money, and would feel comfortable winterizing the boat, i'd be more that glad to hire you to do the job.

It's a 5.0L freshwater cooled engine.

Heck, I don't even care if i just get the seacocks closed and the raw water drained from the block. It has the air-activated drain valves. I just can't get to Long Island for a few weeks, and i'm pretty concerned.

If you could be any assistance, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan, sorry for butting into the LICC forums I live 100s of miles away but I try to read all of boatered posts.
My 2 cents is a good marine mechanic should have no problem getting that thing started without a key. If they have an issue with that they may not be the best mechanic in my opinion. I would think you could get someone to winterize in the water without you being there fairly simply. As far as the crane I dont have experience with that so cant comment. I am no expert but I read it would have to be somewhere around 24 degrees for 24 hours or more before any damage can be done. I am not certain about I read it online but surely the waters there are not yet that cold.

Dan,
Your not in trouble yet and you don't need to jump on getting the boat out of the water yet. Having your boat in the water is actually better than having it on land with no winterizing. Dave and Don have a really good mobile mechanic, hopefully they will chime in soon.

I think your asking alot.
Your asking someone to go into the backyard of a house they don't know if you own, jump start a boat, they don't know you own, have it hauled, have it winterized, then they don't know if you will pay them becuase they don't know who you are!

How far upstate? You can be down to LI from most points upstate in 8 hours, 1 hour to meet a mobile mechanic, 8 hours back.

Sorry, I do know a mobile mechanic, but not sure he will want to touch this situation. I will let Don answer for him as he is probably doing work at Don's house as we speak.

Who did you use last year? Does that person know the boat?
Anyone on BE know you?

Just my .02. Would love to help you, but I am thinking the flip side of this.

Thanks guys, situation averted, I'm having the boat winterized tomorrow, and hauled on monday.

Dave, it is a tough situation, but not one that no one would want to involve themselves in. I was offering to hire someone here to do it, if they happen to be a mechanic, and yes, I do know people on BE. Ask Don, we've been friends for years.

I've been driving down most weekends to Long Island, it is about a 7.5 hour drive, but now it's snow season, and its' been snowing straight for 5 days, over 2 feet of snow on the ground, so therefore, I really don't want to drive down, if I could hire someone to do it in my absence.

Thanks Walter for making me feel better about the cold, i just checked the weather, and it's supposed to be COLD (20 degrees) for a while, so I want to get this done. But, hey, it's supposed to be 9 degrees (as a high) on monday up here in middle of no where, hicktown USA.

I know Dan..........he's a real nice guy !

Hey Dan......Sorry I didn't call you back....but I was busy all day.
Walter is right......your better off in the water ....then on top of it. I'm not sure if my old mobil mechanic will be able to squeeze you in.....he's in the busy time of his business........but e-mail me.....and I'll send you his phone # and you can try to make arrangements with him.

I would like to try and help you......but its a bad time for me right now. I'm working my 8A to 8p shift for the next 2 weeks....plus running to Queens to show my house that I'm trying to sell ( without a realtor ).....is a pain in the a$$.

Can you come down on the weekend ??......I know its a long haul.

Good Luck.......e-mail me.

So ....I guess your out of here too ?. I'm surprised you haven't got any offers. Ours will hit the MLS early next year......we're done also.

When you get a chance .....give me a call.......

That service does look great, but it's 100amp . . .
Like the new kitchen? Much better than the original with the YELLOW countertop

Dan,
Glad your getting it done. Was not trying to be a "hard ass", just pointing out the obvious. Good luck with the relo, house sale and boat winterization!
