Hurrican Irene Headed Our Way!

We have to wait till later in the day because it will close off the canal. I hope it works out.
It's hard to imagine that closing the canal like that won't cause a problem but they said they've done it before.
Can't do much more now except hope for the best.
If we get the kind of surges they are talking about I think I would be in worse shape up on blocks in a marina.

John, everybody cross ties, the question is when, but I'm doing it around noon tomorrow and anyone who isn't gone then is SOL. You'll see, everyone will do it at a certain point. It's not just going to be you blocking the canal.

Looks like the Windy Clipper is snug as a bug!
11:00 News is saying the winds will probably be more like Tropical Storm (70 or so) by the time it gets to us but the surge is what we need to worry about. I wonder if we'll have an inlet at Gilgo by Sunday night or if the FI inlet will close up.

Tieing lines across the canal has to be illegal.
Makes sense, but your blocking navigation.

Walter, looks lik Rick took down his canvas after all that!
I hope his metal frame doesn't get airborne!

We didn't tie up Eric's table, gotta do that tommorrow.

Erics table is in the dumpster

Ps ur boat is tied fine checked it tonight at high tide

I got some fuel for my boat earlier and there were at least 8 boats waiting on line to get into Venetian shores to haul out at the ramp. I saw lots of trailer boats going by today. I started prepping mine but still have plenty to do tomorrow. Was just reading on Newsday that this storm should be weaker than Gloria but it's bigger and slower moving so will have to deal with it over a longer period of time. The article predicted less of a surge than Gloria, we'll see. The NOAA south shore bay forecast is calling for 7' seas, imagine that in the GSB? The wind is supposed to go east and then west (just as strong or stronger) so can't prepare for any particular wind direction.

Hopefully it will weaken some more but I'm not taking any chances. Good luck everyone, hope it doesn't end up too bad.

John

Anyone have a clue when its supposed to hit the island? I am getting mixed reports.

Oh, I got a special phone call today from Ed Mangano. He really cares and called me personally..Oh, and every other nassau resident lol

BC...The Hurricne itself should hit between 0800 to noon on Sunday but the tropical storm winds will start late afternoon / early evening on Saturday. Thats the problem...with up to 20 hours of strong winds we'll go through two high tide cycles. The first will be Saturday evening around 2000 and the Sunday morning aaround 0800. The astronomical high tides that are also occuring will pull the tide up by a foot from the normal high tide.

I'm not sure where Mangano is expecting 300k people to go.

Maybe this storm takes care of the colliseum issue.

At this point a cat 1 or tropical storm, it is going to hit us for a long time frame. That is the key. We may not get 70+ winds, but even 40-50 for 20 hours will push a lot of water up though the GSB and into canals and rivers. Serge is the killer here along with whatever winds we get.

I see our RO's double tying their boat; I did the same during previous possible hurricanes that died before they got to us. But this one is large and even as a tropical storm we could have 10 feet of water breaking apart your docks, water lines, electric, etc. Maybe you can’t get to your boat following this for a long time. No one is going be able to rebuild the docks that quick.

In do agree that I could be looking though my marinas fence and see “Radio Waves” off its stands laying on that go fast that is next to me, with the 40+ Ocean Yacht on top of me. So I guess it is a personal choice. But my insurance broker suggested a haul out for this particular storm.

I any case, good luck to all and may we all have made the right choice.

Especially when he shuts down mass transit and closes roads ............WTF ?

NC Governor was on the news earlier saying they are still in the soup but it isn't as bad as they expected.
They seem to be backing off of the wind predictions a bit, but the surge and rainfall concerns are getting a little more severe.
My friend offered again this morning to let me put the boat up on his gas station on the high ground here in Farmingdale, but the chances of getting a boat hauler to do it at this point are slim to none.

So I'm watching channel 7 and a reporter actually said " the fog is cloaking the arrival of the hurricane ". The hysteria surrounding the coverage of this storm is borders on insanity.
I'm waiting to hear that the sky is falling.

I think once they sign an emergency order......some rules are suspended....and who is navagating in a hurricane anyway ??

in florida tying boats across canals is standard procedure but it's residents coordinate things among themselves so that those up canals can come in.

by the time boats are cross tied, nobody is going out anyway and chances are everybody is already in the canal.

This is my first hurricane on this canal but I was told this is what they've been doing for years. My neighbors told me to hold off until about 4:00 PM so that everyone has a chance to get in or out of the canal before they take it upon themselves to close it.
I'm not sure how it's all going to work out.

I'm actually more afraid of trees coming down locally because of all the rain we've had in the past few weeks and all the leaves being on them.

There are no trees anywhere near my boat on the canal. That's one of the reasons I declined the offer to put the boat up on my friend's gas station. There are a couple of trees near where it would have been blocked up.

Blocking it up anywhere near my canal didn't make much sense to me. If the surge is what we need to prepare for I would have to have it blocked up 8 or 10 feet high to make a difference. That just isn't realistic.

I sure hope I made the right decision about staying in the water. I really like my boat.

I can see where marinas with floating docks would want all boats out because of the potential damage to those docks. That and the windfall they are going to get for hauling and re-launching all of those boats.

Channel 4 just said storm surge expected on South shore beaches is 3-6 feet. More in NY Harbor and in Long Island Sound.

Channel 4 is covering too big an area for any accuracy. Try this instead:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/psurgegraphics_at4.shtml?gm

You can zoom in wherever you need to, and run probability projections for any surge from 2 feet on up.

This is across the street.....one canal west of mine.......

Good luck everybody...........

I assume someone with a dinghy brings everyone back and out.
Gee, maybe I should of moved my boat to a canal!
