Hurrican Irene Headed Our Way!

We lost cable so no internet here except via the BB. Power and our one remaining POTS phone line still work.

Long beach is a mess. I was able to get out and head to massapequa to check the searay and my house. The basement apartment is a total loss, about 3 foot of water in the house. I have two pumps going. The boat is safe, the canvas held up really well. Not bad for a 4 year old AMC job..

I was heading south on Forest Avenue, and the streets were completely flooded. Apparently there is a mayor of Forest Avenue. He was screaming at me to stop and slow down and that I was throwing too much of a wake. Really? So I am continuing down, and the guy throws something hard at my truck. Im not sure what it was. I slammed on the brakes got out of the car and had a talk with this guy. Hes telling me there is no need for me to be out of my house. I told him its none of his concern. I start to walk away and the guy shoves me and down I go in 4ft of water. I got up and stormed towards him. I got in his face and he shoved me again. I got one good punch in that most likely broke his nose. The firemen driving around with dingys had to stop the mess before it got more out of control.

Anyways, Im now up in Greenlawn where there is power and dry clothes.

Hope everyone is doing well! Its almost over

Boat,

When the streets are flooded some door steps are at water level. When you leave a wake it is enough to get water into the house or raise the level that is already in there. The pushing is over the top, but tensions are peaked when your stuff is being damaged.

Just saying

Billy, totally aware of that. The houses on this part of the street are built up higher. Its a high ranch thats raised up..Plus the water wasnt even 1 foot up his driveway.

Its done with and over with, but I am not going to be pushed around. Yeah its stressful on everyone, but to throw something at my truck (which I looked at and whatever he threw left a nice dent and chipped the paint), is totally out of line.

I havent made it down to my garage in valley stream to see the limos. I heard valley stream was hit pretty hard too. Not looking forward to getting down there tomorrow. I tried getting there today, but I was told there were too many down trees and floods to get close enough.

Im going to attempt to head back to Long beach in a few and well see how things are doing now.

It took a while of navigating various underwater blocks to Babylon Marine and was happy to see Radio Raves still on the stands. She is a little dirty but safe with all canvas in place. I then waded in calf / knee deep water down to my dock and found it no longer usable. It is completely buckled up and down like a roller coaster and my $400+ Dock Box gone that was screwed to the dock.

I then look towards Rainbow Marine and see a dock box on its side against the building, but could it be mine? I took a chance and I dove down that block until it was not safe then waded the rest of the way. Yup it was my box with my combo lock still working. I had to use a bit of ingenuity to semi float it since it as had chairs and other stuff in it.

Getting it back with all its contents including some vodka and rum made the fact that I have no slip for a while not so painful. Was not planning to boat over Labor Day weekend so hopefully within two weeks I have a slip. Linda and I are looking very forward to end of season boating though October.

For me I made the right Choice Hauling or I would have had damage.

my mother has dockspace in west islip if you need for rest of season, just ger her a bottle of wine. might have electric too if it didnt get ruined today.

Boat down south if you create a wake with your car in a flood zone that's what you get a WAKE. Folks shot to kill and the local law writes your death up a suicide, must have been 20 or so suicides during Katrina. If you are so concerned with your auto why are you driving around in salt water?

My boat made it through fine, had some water in the house downstairs and my garage flooded but no real damage that I'm aware of at this point. I put my dinghy in the water yesterday planning to use it to drop a couple anchors then spoke to a couple of my neighbors and we decided to run lines across the canal. I ended up doing both, 2 lines across the canal and 2 anchors, so I ended up with 10 lines holding the boat to the dock and 4 holding it away from the dock. Everything worked out well, only thing is I had to go out there about 1am to adjust lines since once the wind started blowing those long lines across the canal stretched enough that on a good gust I'd hit my pilings. Tightened things up and then was good for the rest of the storm. From what I've seen so far the March 2010 storm caused more wind damage to houses than Irene did but this matched Gloria for the worst flooding we ever had. Pretty much my whole yard was submerged, and I had 10" of water outside my back door. Unlike during Gloria though since then we built a sump by the door and using a Rule 2500 GPH bilge pump I was able to keep the water on the inside down to 1-2" which isn't too bad. If the full level was inside would have caused a much bigger mess. The main living spaces in my house are on the 2nd and 3rd floors and the first floor is basically like a basement so once it all dries out it will be fine. We never lost power or cable surprisingly.

The wind actually seems to be picking up again. I'm going to leave all the extra lines on until tomorrow.

When going down one of the blocks by Rainbow Marine after retrieving my missing dock box an SUV heading towards me was pushing water, but I was going real slowly. I really don’t travel on flooded roads and don’t live in a flood zone so I was not that cognizant of a no-wake zone on land. This guy came running of his house screaming, but that vehicle had already passed and now he looks at me and made a few gestures of being pissed off. I stopped the car and very politely said I did not make all that, but then he pointed in fount of me in which there was a small wave of water that I displaced. I immediately humbly apologized which he seemed to welcome. But if he would have been abusive and threw something at my Jeep, we would have been swimming together. So that ended ok.

I wasnt concerned with my car. I was concerned that this guy threw something at my car. I only went to south pequa to check on my boat and my house which I have tenants in. They have two smaller cars and were not able to get out. I called them and brought them what they asked for. Did I make them pay, nope not at all.

You can only go so fast when you are in 2-3 foot of water with a car, so of course you are going to throw a wake.

This was earlier today. The bush to the bottom right is 3ft tall. The grass ends and then it drops down a bit. Just to give you a clue how deep the water was.

So AYC was under a foot of water or more at around 9 this morning.
D dock bay came over and the while dock was under water.
All boats were fine except I had dumpster blow into back of mine.
Made a small mark on swim platform and smashed the electric meter, water bib and my plugs.
No big deal.
Here are some pics.

Tide is pretty much back to normal now. If this northwest wind continues it may be on the low side by tomorrow. Since it was still gusting pretty hard we all decided to wait till tomorrow to take off all the lines we have tied across.

I think I had some of the dock boards in my back yard............

Dave, looks like the cover of the dumpster is on our platform. Did you get dammage ? Nice Rainbow pic...
