Hurrican Irene Headed Our Way!

I doubled the lines, put out some fenders and moved my cushions inside. Not much else I can do.

Be safe everyone.

Dave - no staying on the boat for this one.

Riding this one at home.
Fire island is being evacuated.

What do you guys do to keep the ropes sliding off the poles?
Nails near top or nails into rope?

For those guys who are not backed in between poles but are tied up to bulk head off the side, how do you plan to keep it off the dock? Drop anchors and pull the boat our? Just use fenders? Is that enough??

if your on a canal you can attach some lines acros from you. thats what we do on my block. an anchor or two is better than nothing.
if you dont have enough fenders you cant beat a plain old tire. back of every gas station is full of them. sure it'll leave black scuff marks but that buffs out. just run your hand around tire and make sure the steel belt isnt exposed.

I will be at the boat tomorrow and Saturday. Plan to put on extra lines & fenders, take the covers off, put on the mooring cover, deflate the dinghy and take it home, put all cushions inside.

I may stop down at the marina during early high tide on Sunday. If anyone wants me to report the condition of their boat at the Anchorage, PM me the info to get in touch.

Zane I never thought of tying a boat off in a canal that way. My canal is probably 200 foot across so that may not work for me..

Just got an email from the company that insures my boat detailing the procedure for reporting a loss. Do you think they're trying to tell me something?

my canal is abt 75 ft. 200ft is alot and your neighbors have to be on board. if i was on your canal i would get some anchors out.last time i tied off like that was in a noreaster. water was real high and i was afraid rub rail was going to get above my pilings. that time i only needed 1 line mid ship to hold it off. saturday i'll put 3 across. my biggest fear is a neighbors boat breaking loose.

I put anchors out towards the middle of the canal, one off the bow, one off the stern angled out. It's worked well for me in the past, in fact getting the anchors out once it's over can be difficult they dig in so much.

Anchors will help if they re by enough and set as far as possible but the pressure on the beam is huge. BIG fenders and heavy fender boards (4x4) if you have pilings are critical but will need to adjusted during the storm

take it from a Hurricane Charley CAT 4 survivor

blowing water can be forced in anywhere

duct tape your:

fuel tank vent
fuel tank fill
water tank vent
water tank fill
all engine room vents

take it all off the next day

Take it from a Hurricane Charley, CAT 4 survivor:

get 4 48" mobile home earth anchors and run extra lines to fend off other boats fore and aft of yours. Cheap insurance to keep your boat from being holed by vessels unprepared for the storm.

Mine are sitting in a box, waiting for the next one.

I get a call from my Marina and they left a message to call them back. I knew why they were calling so I called my insurance broker to get the information on hauling. I am with Travelers and they said that I am covered for 50% of the haul out “IF” when the storm is over my mooring / docking area it is classified as a Hurricane watch or Warning. Now what does that mean, if the storm is hitting my marina it is the storm not a watch or warning. So I kept pushing the very stressed lady for more info who took my call and announced that she and not left her desk since she got in and had to pee… Bottom line if this is not a hurricane watch / warning at some point within Babylon, I have to pay for the haul. So I thought to ride it out like all the others….

Now I call my Marina and was told that it is mandatory that I Haul Out or I have to stay with my boat for the duration… WTF, and I will say it again WTF…. I heard during Gloria they loss most of their docks and the entire place was under water. So now I am Being Hauled and put in a safe spot in the back of a fenced in yard. FILO….. WTF

the waves hitting a seawall and reflecting back can cause unbelievable conditions so hauling out it a good idea to get your boat away from that.
Staying aboard, unless is a very protected area, would simply be nuts. It will be similar to being inside a washing machine and once it starts it will be impossible to get off. Adjusting lines wont be possible.
Just go home and stay safe.

200ft across is in Massapequa by florence beach. 200ft is narrow compared to others near there..

Brad
since their making you take the boat out, i assume their charging you for it? do they then assume any responsibility if the boat gets screwed on land?

The calm before the storm at my slip

Andy, Good point, but as they couched it to me was, I did not have to haul if I stayed with the boat, yea right !!. Over the years when I was at at the LIYC we had a few named storms head our way and then they were a bust. But we all had a Hurricane party and hoped for a little rock and roll, but no damage. In hind sight, knowing what damage can happen we should have prayed for it to stay away. A few years older and less bold, I am doing that now. And no f-en way would I stay with the boat based on the predicted model of Irene. So if my boat does get damaged on land I would assume it would have also been damaged in the water as I am not in the most protected spot. My dock is on piles not a bulk head and when Gloria came there was no more dock.

SeaTow is pulling all their boats out late tomorrow. They will be hauled at differnt locations just in case one area is hit harder then another. Also, New York water Taxi may be sending all their boats from Red Hook to West Point. I believe the Oakdale Yacht Club is pulling every boat out that is in a slip. There shouldn't be one boat in a slip when Irene hits...correct me if i'm wrong on that one.

I think because there have been so many threats and nothing significant in over 30 years on LI. Some may be polishing the bell while their boat is sinking. I am takeing this one seriously and if it is a bust, the better.
