Hurricane Earl coming our way?

Looking at NOAA's forecast, it doesn't look like Zach's Bay will be that bad. It looks like strong winds (25knts) early in the day, then getting better in the afternoon.

Zachs Bay is a nightmare on a good day :)

Ok.. ok.. so I settled for 5 cases of beer and 6 12 packs of Mikes Hards mixed flavor packs.

Wow...My grocery store just sells the Mike's hard lemonade. I didn't know about other flavors! I just picked up some variety packs at the beverage center. I knew something good would come from this thread.

Hey Rich...yes, I'm working Friday and I hope not to have to leave the office. Of course, there will be the usual boat breaking free from the mooring call or boat sinking in the slip call.

I buy mike's 24 bottle variety pack at costco it's cheaper.

I just heard on News 12 that there will be no evacuation order for Fire Island...Thats good news.

We have a tropical storm watch!
I will be on boat friday nite riding this out!

Cranberry is the best, followed by black cherry and limeade.

Be careful Friday. Hopefully you won't have to leave the slip. I got caught in a squall off of Bayberry Pt. back in July and it wasn't fun. I can only imagine being out in that for a sustained period.

Getting worse.

My plan:

- Double up lines.
- load beer and food on boat.
- get on boat
- ride it out in the slip.

Again, please tie up all your dock crap!

Not a smart idea to "ride it out in the slip". If something goes wrong you could be royally screwed.

Curious why you would ride it out at the slip. I am debating hanging out at my club with my boat near by but my thought is, what could I do if it really got bad? Once the lines are on and everything is secured, I'm thinking I head home. Will check the damage, if any, the next day. Let me know if I'm missing something.

Dave,

I hope you drive a truck. Flooding in that area can bad. High tide is around 6pm Friday. Depending on track of storm there could be 3ft of water in the streets & over the docks. The Halloween storm (Perfect Storm) I had my previous boat at the Anchorage & there was 3ft of water over my finger pier.

One piece of equipment you may want to have onboard is a small & sharp hatchet. No one wants to use it, but a very long time ago, we were in Montauk, during a "tropical" storm. The floating docks broke up and we had to ride the rest of the storm out in the middle of Lake Montauk.

If you have to leave the dock as we did, you're not going to be able to untie the lines and it will take too long to cut them with a knife (if it's a twisted line, they could also snap back at you as you cut.)

Good Luck everyone and hopefully it will blow by without any harm!

p.s. - Salami and eggs are great hurricane cuisine! It's the only thing that the capatin knows how to cook and he only does it when we're on storm watch.

Well we're at Watch Hill enjoying a very nice summer afternoon. Quite a dock party going on already, marina is about half full. Should be an interesting Friday....

The 2:00 NOAA Advisory did not change much from 11:00. But I went into the interactive cone and can see that in our area in Suffolk the sustained winds for us would be at 50-60% storm force winds (1 Minute average >= 39 MPH) I consider that something to watch closely. A slight shift could change everything. Not just a little exitement of a 40 mph blow and hanging on our boats.

Isn’t that what happen in 1985 Gloria ? It was expected to glance us then it slammed my village of Brightwaters and near by areas big time, I was not living there until 1995 but saw pictures.

I only plan to be on boat in slip if they say its gonna just glance us. If its worse I won't be there. Will park my truck away from dock and watch the rising tide. I have seen the streets flood there. Been thru a few storms and I am well aware of where the anchorage floods. I think it will be fine and I will use common sense. I have done this before.

Used common sence before? Sorry Dave that was too easy.... ;)

Anyway, a bunch of us at the LIYC stayed on our boats for Issabel, but ended up a bust. Had it been a Gloria, I may not be writing this. The LIYC docks and boats got f-ed that day.

The Captain brought the boat over to Gilgo on Tues-we were lucky to get the last slip. Now I'm not so sure how "lucky" we're gonna be. Guess we'll drive over tonight to secure the ole girl and tie extra lines & add some fenders. Windy out now, sure hope we don't get hit hard. Can't do much if the winds pick up-can't get the boat home safely!
