Hurricane Sandy

Tide is about 6" short of where Irene peaked now with 45 minutes to go before the listed high tide in Babylon...

High tide here in west islip. Water is couple inches lower than it was at Irene's peak.

I have a theory but people tell me I am wrong.
My theory is Long Island is very flat.
So as water comes up in the great south bay, it runs north.
So depending on how fast it comes up, it will only get so high.
The concept is like a swimming pool.
if my swimming pool is 10' deep from top to bottom and I fill my pool and keep filling it, the pool will still only be 10' deep.
The water will start to run into my yard and neighbors yard, etc, etc.
I think because long island is so flat, the water by the shore line will only get so deep.
I pray this is true becuase it means that what I saw for Irene in the AYC is as deep as it will get and the boat won't float!!!

unless the water overtops the barrier islands.

Can you imagine the mess this is going to leave. Its almost like a sunami coming in. FDR in NYC is now flooded from 61st to 125th st

It's high tide, but we probably get another hour of surge before it starts to ebb. The level is that of Irene, with one more high tide to deal with tonight. It could be a foot higher then now.
Bruce is right if there is a breach of the barrier beaches, all bets are off how much higher it could go. Maybe two feet higher then now.

I'm going to take a ride down in a little while when the tide goes out to check on my boat and my uncle's boat. I want to time it to be there when the tide is out and before the higher winds start.

It would be interesting to see if the one good result of this storm is the clearing of the three inlets on the south shore. The shoaling is extrememly bad and there's no money for us to do the job. Maybe Poseidon can help us. Stay safe, all. Hy

"Go put it in home depot lot with a for sale sign."

Dave - Very funny and a great idea!

Has anyone heard from Walter? Is he on boat? Walter, are you ok? Pics? Videos?

Unfortunately nature doesn't want the inlets where they are. Fire island inlet used to be where the lighthouse is. Littoral drift has extended FI miles over the years. I think you will see a breach by gilgo or where the old coast guard station used to be.

Walter decided to ride it out in the ocean. He is off the coast somewhere, drinking a rum and coke, watching tv, and riding 30' swells!!!!

Just kiding, his boat is out of water and he is home trying to get his generator working!!!

Unfortunately, SS3 would not pull me. I think their lift is broken, not sure. I took off my canvas yesterday and unfortunately don't own a mooring cover. So my seats are going to get a hurricane wash. I used an entire roll of duct tape to tape my canvas dash cover down, hope it stays put. I also duct taped the cabin door cracks, to stop water from blowing in, hope this works too! My biggest concern is the surge. 4' and I should be ok. If 8', don't think so!

You should of come to AYC, they were hauling anyone who showed up yesterday.
They made alot of money in tips!!

This is going to be real bad. I have been on this street essentially forever. Grew up down the block and have had a boat on the canal for 35 plus years starting with a dinghy. I never saw tides like this before the storm even hit. The 10am high tide pretty much matched that of Gloria and Irene. People are gonna be wiped out. My house is high and I am nervous. Some of my neighbors are cpl feet lower than me and the water was lapping at their front doors. Heartbreaking really seing the look on their faces.

I felt the high this morning was still a good 6 inches less than Irene caused. But it's sure not going out much. I guess I'm thinking tonight it might come in the garage. Going to have to get busy moving stuff in a few hours. Water is not a big deal, but water with battery acid, lawn chemicals and motor oil would not be nice so it's time to get them off the floor.
