It's scheduled for Memorial Day weekend. What marina's/anchorages are nearby, we're thinking of coming out for the weekend.

Jones Beach is part of the barrier beach which includes fire island.
Most of the marinas are town marinas and require residency.
I could probably find you a slip in our marina for a few nites.
We usually go to Watch Hill Fire Island, which is about a hour east of Zachs bay where the show is.
There are closer marinas on Fire Island like Seaview, Flynns, or Kismet.
Look in Freeport, that is sort of SouthWest of Zachs bay. I think there are some transients there.
Our marina is about 40min from Zach's Bay. Let me know if you want a slip there.
If we are at watch hill, which we probably will be, you can have my slip.

Thanks Dave, where are the best spots to watch the air show by boat?

Zachs bay is the best, but Zach's bay is a zoo.
I have done in 3 times by boat and everytime I do, I say I will never do it again.
Zach's bay is skinny in alot of spots, the bottome is loose mud.
Anchors don't set well, every new boater, ton's of boats, drinking, you can guess the rest.

There are other options.
One is to watch it from the ocean side. The show is not as great, but if ocean is flat, you can float and watch it.
Another option is get to Zach's day or two before and spend the nite in zach's. This way, you get anchored well. If you don't mind being on the hook, this is the best of all options. The day of the show it will fill up. The day before you can probably get a good spot near the shore with a rear anchor out as well if you want.

Mike I went last year on a friends boat in fact the one I post that is for sale. I was a lot of fun, the ocean was so rough we come in to a channel just behind the beach and dropped anchor. I will probably join him again this year assuming he still has his boat. I believe Ben also went out to see the show as well. I actually saw a practice run very cool a couple days before the event. Enjoy there are a few decent places to go to eat be boat while you are out there I wish I could remember the name of the place I went nothing fancy just a good fish shack with fresh fish.

Is there a place to walk the dog in Zachs?

If you have a dingy you can take the dingy to shore and walk the dog on the beach..There are NO amenities at Zachs bay..

Id also consider anchoring just outside zachs closer to Wantagh #3. Theres plenty of water to anchor just outside the channel..Its a 5mph area. I used to anchor out there during the fire work show..

Looking at two of the boats you have, try to get a slip in the Freeport to Seaford area for the Express and take the Scout over to Zachs for the show. Zachs is a pita especially at low tide. There is nothing to do there that would make me want to stay over night. Try to get a slip in Freeport on Woodcliff canal. The nautical mile is there and a large selection of restaurants in walking distance. The ride over in the Scout would be nice and you can go to the beach to walk the dog. It would be a nice trip. On the other day you could go over to Short Beach for bikini watching.

Have fun

Billy K.

Somehow I don't think he would bring both boats, but would be nice.

I think BillyK has the right ticket.........the Nautical Mile.....rather then Zachs.... is the place to be if you want something to do. Zachs SUCKS !!!.........

If the weather looks good, we would consider taking both boats.

There really is not needed I was on a 40' Tiara and we got close enough to enjoy the show if you bring the dink you will be fine with the dog. I just spoke to my friend and then check the charts I wasn't far from Zach's Bay just on the other side of the beach on the inlet side.

If we can see it good from the ocean, and the weather cooperates, perhaps a day trip...

.he ocean is the place to be but it can get real rough and uncomfortable. I was at the helm last year and I went back in for shelter quick. If it's calm that sounds great

I went to Zachs for the air show last summer. I got there really early on Saturday before the crowds got there, and stayed late. There was plenty of room when I got there and I was able to choose a great spot. From about 10:00 AM until about 2 hours after the show was over was total insanity. I almost got rammed a few times by boats when they dragged anchor, and neary had my anchor line run over several times.
I wound up going back on Sunday afternoon after getting a call form a friend to assist a stranded boater. He went to leave and picked up an old anchor line that was laying on the bottom. It wrapped around his prop.
I thought Saturday was bad, but Sunday was a lot worse.
The two guys I went on the rescue mission with are out almost every morning in the summer fishing. They has never been to Zachs on a Holiday weekend before. These guys have been boating for about a century between them. They couldn't believe the insanity they saw that day and swore they would never go near there again.
The show was great when I went, but I don't think I would do it again. If you really want to go I think the best way to do it is to go over in a dinghy or small boat that you can beach. Get there early, and leave real late.
If I did it again, I would probably go outside of the Jones Inlet and drift around all day. But it would have to be a nice calm day.

Am I missing something? Jones Inlet isnt all that near Zachs Bay..Relatively speaking its not far, but its not like the next cove over, how much could you possibly see? Youll see the planes, but they wont be as close to land like they are in Zachs bay...

ALot people anchor out just west of the Wantagh bridge. There was a bay constable stationed there trying to make it a 5mph zone. That didnt work out to well but in any event its a good spot and away from the loones !!!

West of the Wantagh bridge? There are 3 Wantagh bridges...
