KVH M1/M3 vs. Intellian i1/i2

I don't know about you guys but I am hooked on HD and for that very reason would get an Intellian the next time as that is the only one out there that is able to pick up the "new" ka directtv hd. Flat screen tv's are cheap now-a-days and all do so much better if you feed it hd signals, on my boat I have a 42" in the salon, 26" in the master and a 20" in the guest all with their own receiver running of a Sea KingDome which I installed in 2005 and was full HD till direct tv switched to the new ka band.
My advice would be spend a little extra if you have to to get the hd dish.

Don't think so, check out the Dish compatible KVH units.

Personally I am not making any upgrades until 3D is fully deployed.

OK Dan now I know what you are talking about and yes KVH doesn't over HD on there smaller domes and they claim that DTV doesn't approve of the method that Intellian is using and there may be potential for interference in the future using this model however at the moment it works. Using the small dome can restrict this so KVH wont sell a unit that isn't approved by the service provider. All I care about is that it works. By the way if you take one look at the smallest KVF unit that does work with HD you will quickly realize it's not an option, it's huge.

Have you guys looked at the KVH HD7?

Full HD for all boxes, looks great.

When you’re out where the big boys play, the high-performance, 24" (60 cm) TracVision M7 offers commercial-grade performance and rock-steady satellite TV reception perfect for boats 60-80'! Add KVH’s GyroTrac (Tuna Tower) Upgrade for outstanding performance in even the most extreme conditions. Plus, the new TracVision M7 includes KVH’s exclusive RingFire™ antenna technology for reception comparable to larger antennas and extending your coverage area as you head offshore. With the TracVision M7, you’ll be watching the big game when the other boats are left with the message “SEARCHING FOR SATELLITE” on their TV screen!

As I said it's Huge and more then twice the price of the I2. Their own add says for boat 60-80 feet I would have to buy a bigger boat first.

Did you look at the M1DX?

According to the Rep Rick Garrison who I met at the show, none of the small size units support HD, if they did that must have change due to other signals that are on similar frequencies. They don't support HD anymore on the M1 or M3 units. I not saying that the Intellian unit will work any better they probably are dealing with the same issues I just couldn't find anyone at the show to discuss this with.

The M1 works with one RG6 I'm not sure about the I2 it isn't a concern for me it's an easy run. Show special on the M1 was under 22 I don't remember exactly i think it was either 2150 or 2180 this seemed like a very good price. The I2 the best price I found was 2K abalmuth I would be happy to give les the business if he sells it. Send me an email or PM when you get an answer. Like you I'm not in a rush do to the weather I was hoping to find a deal at the show now that this hasn't happened I don't care when I get it. I have already purchase a mount from Les last year when I installed my new radar unit I new then I was going to pick up a satellite so my install will be quick and easy.

Dave
Les has it for $2099-He'll get my order but I'm waiting for a break in the snow to go to the boat and take some measurements to confirm the install location and to review the spec’s one more time ;-)

Yes KVH makes a KA band compatible unit but it is very big and cost about $15000. Not an option for most of us on this forum. The Intellian is the only one that is sized for smaller boats that will do KA band. By talking to the other manufacturers I get the impression that they are stumped at how Intellian was able to get it to work and have not been able to come up with their own solutions. Now most other dishes will work on dishnetwork hd for now, till dishnetwork upgrades their stuff, when??? I was told by King Dome that dishnetwork is offering accounts now just for the mobile market.

Again, look at the KVH M1DX. It is Dish HD. I see no reason whatsoever to get hung up on Direct TV and KA unless you are determined to leverage an existing account.

Caltexfla, like I posted most dishes out there will do dishnetwork hd, however there is a reason direct switched to the ka-band. On high end big (50"+) plasma tv's you can really see the difference between dish and direct hd. I would think it is only a matter of time till dish will make the move to the ka-band too, so if you where to buy a new setup now I would think it makes sense to go for the one that can do ka-band hd even if it costs a little more. And yes in my case I use direct for my home, I already have 9 receivers at the house so a couple more for the boat makes very little difference on the bill.

It was an option which I purchased.

Bob has there been any change to your service recently that you know of?

I have had the i2 for a few years now. I would second the great customer service as I also was given one of the service guys cell phone numbers as he wasn't in when I called needing some help on the install. I am running a Dish HD DVR receiver to an HD display. It works great. The unit does only have one LNB so you will only be able to pick up one sat at a time but you can record two channels as long as they are on the same sat. It was very easy to install as it is small and lite. For HD you will need the Dish switch module. If you have DirecTv you probably won't be able to get HD with this unit as DirecTv uses a different sat for their HD stuff.

Kris,
i don't have HD on boat, but I have directv. In my house, I have 1 dish that gets HD and regular, so why wouldn't I2 be able to get HD? I just think you need to point to a different satellite for the HD. The dish at home and on the I2 I think are the parobolic dishes. Guy installing at the house, said that dish gets the HD signal.

Considering the size of the TVs on board my boat I don't see any reason to go with HD however I figured it would be nice if I someday change my mind. I will probably be onto another boat by then so it doesn't really matter.

The slimline is a parabolic dish. It is shaped more oval than round. The dish inside the I2 if I recall is the same shape.

DirecTv uses a different band for their HD content. The i2 along with most smaller dishes pick up the Ku band signal. Dish Network uses this band for all of their content, both SD and HD. DirecTv uses the Ka band signal for their HD content. This band generally requires a larger dish to receive it. As such, you currently won't find any small tracking dishes that are capable of picking up this signal. I am pretty sure that DirecTv uses the Ku band for all their SD programming so the i2 will be fine for SD with DirecTv. Along with a larger size you will also pay at least double for a tracking dish that is capable of picking up the Ka band. Intellian has a dish that will pick up both signals as do a few of the other manufactures but they are all bigger and much more expensive.
