Don't listen to your mechanic. He is incorrect. Volvo Penta issued a service bulletin a while ago relating to propeller damage on IPS drives.
Below is a part of the service bulletin for damaged propellers (supplied by Steve Goetz).
Damaged propeller
Lower gear case undamaged
1 Repair or replace damaged propeller. Refer to section Propeller, replacement, Workshop Manual IPS
2 Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to section Propeller, replacement, Workshop Manual IPS
3 Check shaft eccentricity (runout). Place the shaft in a fixture. Attach a dial indicator and
stand according to the figure. Measurement (A) should be approx. 380 mm.
NOTICE! The indicator's measuring tip should rest against the shaft needle bearing.
Rotate the axle and measure any runout. Max. permitted eccentricity (runout): 0.04 mm.
Replace the propeller shaft if the runout exceeds this value.
4 Pressure test the drive to ensure no oil leaks are present. Refer to section Pressure testing,
Work- shop Manual IPS
5 Check the lower gear case parallelity with the VODIA tool. Refer to description on pages 6–8.
6 Check that the oil does not contain water (is gray in color).
7 Perform a function test.
Maximum runout allowed is .04 mm. I don't think this wobble can be checked without a dial indicator.
