Admiral and I have been thinking about possibly docking further west. We're looking for recommendations for a marina between Lindenhurst and Blue Point. We have a 24' Chaparral with an 8.5' beam. We're looking for a place with floating docks, clean bathrooms, friendly people, electric and water at dock, access to the bay, friendly people, possibly some marina get-togethers, secure facility, fuel and pump-out nearby, and reasonable cost (hopefully). Any suggestions or contacts? You can PM me if that's better for you. Thanks. Hy

SS3 in lindenhurst. Same entrance as the Anchorage. Meets all your criteria, except it is not cheap. They do parties at marina, movie nights for kids, comedy night and many single day and multiple day boat trips. Real nice full service marina.

AYC does not have flosting docks except for little boats.
Not that you need them on the South Shore.
There are lots of marinas in the area.
Look at Marinas.com.

Your cheapest bets will be bayshore.

Whats the going rate for a slip.... for the season..... in Suffolk county ???

Depends on the slip, what it offers, size, etc.
I would say about $120 a foot is average.
AYC a 40x14 slip is about $3900 and that includes winter storage.
So AYC tends to be a little cheaper than some other marinas more becuase the rentals are private.
If you rent thru office at AYC it is around $4400.

A private slip....behind a house..... would be worth $3K.... for a season ?

Don, I think a slip behind a house would be less more like 2k for a 28-35’ type. In most cases there are no facilities / amenities, except I would assume electric and water. Go get on your boat and leave type of deal. A while back someone in our club knew someone renting for $1800 for summer only and a summer winter in water combo (12 months) for $2500. I would not mind a deal like that now if it was within the Babylon to Islip area. If any one knows of one in that area and price range please let me know.

Private rentals behind a house are less. 3k sounds high. Look around.

Brad.......$1800 sounds cheap......they get $1500 on the north shore for a mooring !

I was considering renting out my dock space this season........but I'm undecided.

Our present marina will cost approximately 2400 for the season, typical going rate. What makes it difficult to decide whether to stay or not is that the present marina is secure, close to the bay (though a little hairy to navigate out of when the wind kicks up), and resonable in cost. The owners and few people we've met there have also been very nice. The problems are that the place is usually empty and we're further east than places we might visit. The non-floating dock has been conquered by a stairs/ladder I attached to the bulkhead. The Admiral isn't totally happy where we are, and if she's not happy......so, I'm looking.

I just got a callback from AYC with the available slips. Most are on G dock. Any comments pro or con for that particular dock? I'm going to take a ride over there to check it out, but would appreciate your comments based on your experience. You can PM me if you don't want to put it public. Thanks. Hy

You can use the http://anchorageyc.com/sliplocator.htm
Slip locator to see where G dock is.
G dock borders with the school.
There was a security issue over there with kids hopping the fence.
I think, don't quote me that the fence now has barb wire and security issues are resolved.
G dock has direct access to the bay, which is nice but coming in and out of there in a southwest wind can be a little hairy, though with your size boat its probably a non issue.

IMHO, G dock is not good, it boarders the school yard. Many break ins on that dock, or just kids partying on your boat.

Walter.....even with the new security guard..........LOL

They can't be everywhere all the time, especially, the new guy :)

Don,

In my research it is around $50-70 per foot for back yard and $100-140 for Marinas and some with winter storage included.

I am looking for the range of $50-60,(Back Yard) which is about what my town (Islip)would charge. I am on the list but who knows when I will get the nod....

I am at $100 per foot where I am now and 10 minutes from my house and 5 minutes from the LIRR when I get off nights to check the boat.

Just looking for options to save some $'s for gas and trips..

Brad.....I have not done any research on what the going rate is..........but I guess what your saying sounds reasonable. Does that include water and electric ??

I'm undecided because ........ we have plans to be away on the motorhome from mid June thru early September....plus the house will be on the market this summer.....and I don't know if I should have a renter on the property too.

I'll have to take a hard look at it.

Behind a house is generally the cheapest because it is no frills, but homeowners usually are more concerned with a fixed dollar amount for their property than they are the size of your boat. They usually quote you a price and tell you the max size boat that fits there. If you have something smaller, you still pay the asking price. Usually it includes use of the hose for a washdown when you come in, and basic electric if you need it.
I have a friend that rents 50' of bulkhead behind a house in Massapequa. He pays $2000 for the year. His son was renting a spot a few blocks up the canal for his 19' boat. The owner of that house rented his bulkhead out in two sections to my friends son, and another guy. They each paid $1000. Some people like to do it that way so that they don't get big boats.
The guy that rents the slip in front of me pays $3500 year round. It's 50' of private property, but not behind a house. He keeps a 34' boat there. It is a nice set up with water and electric, but none of the other amenities you mentioned in your first post.
I keep my boat on private property that I own, but if I weren't there, and were looking for a place with the amenities that you mentioned, I would give the AYC in Lindenhurst a real close look. It has great bay access, well protected, and a very short ride to the Robert Moses. They have a pool, bathrooms, security, fuel, pump out, and you can work on your own boat or bring in an outside contractor as long as he is cleared with the office. Not many other boatyards or marinas will let you do that. There are very few floating docks, but I have noticed that a good number of slips there have finger piers which make getting on and off the boat real easy. Slips are frequently advertised for rent by private owners on Craigslist, or through the office for usually a little more money. I've seen several slips advertised for sale there too, and have spoken with one or two would be sellers in the past that wanted to rent their slips until they sold. The problem with that is that if it gets sold, you may have to leave at the end of the season or something.
If you can forego the amenities and just want to try the area out for a season, then renting behind a house might be the way to go. It will be cheaper, and give you the chance to look around the area.
