If you where purchasing Oil Filters for your boat, what kind do you prefer ? Are some really that much better than the others?

I have twin 5.7 litre OMC's (1988 vintage)and use the Mercury 25W40 engine oil.

Thanks,

lotta folks fuss about Fram.. don't know if that's an urban legend. I usually go w/ purolator... plain 'ole car filter.

A marine oil filter may have a slightly better paint job than a car filter, but he inside is the same and I wonder even if the paint job is any better given cars (and their filters) in the northeast get blasted with salt all winter and seem to do fine.

I would avoid Fram also. Amsoil, Mobil 1 and Purolator Pure One are the best and most expensive. I like Bosch as middle of the road. Supertech at Wallymart is also a decent filter.

If that's not enough information for you

I used to like the AC Delco filters until they shortened them up to about 1/2 the size.

My brother prefers WIX on his Sterling’s performance motors.. NAPA/WIX are probably equivalent.
I've been running Purolator Filters since the Delco's were sized down.

Does anyone know who makes the filters for Mercuriser?
As for oil, I've been running Castrol GTX 20w50 w/no problems since we've had the boat.
I've considered the Merc 25w40 oil... but not sure if I should change now or not.

I've been using the Drill Pump option to pump out.. not sure how many years they are good for?? It seemed to take a lot longer last fall.
Does anyone have a suggested preference that is not too expensive?

Why change the oil if the current one is doing the job. If I were going to change, I would go to Rotella or Delo. A lot of the additives in the newer oils actually cut some of the lubricity properties. I read that here but I cannot recall the thread.

Les has a host of oil changers for very reasonable prices at BoatFix. Make sure you get one that can hold the entire sump in one shot.

Dom: please explain more about the discount???

The Mercruiser filter is a Champion filter. If my reading of most these studies is correct, you cannot beat a plain old Purolator. Excellent filtration, great price. The premium Purolator filters better but has less flow which for high revving engine which is not good. Frams are a proven piece of junk. Most surprising..Motorcraft, a very good filter.

This is one case where I have yet to see anything special about "marine". You just need to buy a good filter. If you care about what kind of paint is on it, you need to determine why your engines are getting wet and learn to change the filter at appropriate intervals!

I usually get a Wix. They are easy to find, either in wix brand or off branded and work well. I will use other good quality filters if available. I stay away from Fram.

Boy Fram really gets panned here. I stopped buying them for that reason and the fact that my FIL who is in the industry says the get counterfeited a ton so only buy at big shops. The article link posted here certainly pans them...is that the main source or they really that bad from other sources?

Our office moved within walking distance to NAPA so its NAPA Gold (WIX) for me.

I have a quicksilver 35-866340Q02 oil filter. How do I cross reference it to something else?

Dofdaze: Mercruiser Filters are made by Champion who also produce other brands
as well. The reason nobody uses Fram is because of

1. This metal body
2. Less filter media than other brands
3. Cardboard anti drainback valve that of course doesn't work.
4. Low grade media as compared to other brands.

Sorry to clarify above post that is Champion Labs not the spark plug company

NAPA can cross reference fuel and oil filters. When traveling there usually a NAPA store not far away.
