Mercruiser stops running

Each motor has its own battery and a house battery. I have Yandina combiner that connects all three batterys for charging.
Ground from each motor to its battery, in addition all three batteries are ground together.

So you don't have the engines starting and running connected to separate P & S batteries?

Are all the battery negative terminals properly connected together and then the daisy chain connected to clean and tight engine grounds on both engines? There can be a several important engine grounds on each engine.

Some alternators will not start charging until a critical engine RPM is exceeded.

The fact you don't get steady flashes from the timing strobe is certainly not good if the strobe had very good connections.

Update time, after switching out all the electrical components. Today I swapped carbs between motors. After letting the starboard run for around 1hr at 1400rpms I pull the throttle back to idle. Idle was low so the motor died. Now the test, will the beast start. Nope, popped a few times but would not fire up and run. While cranking the motor over I had a timing light on the coil wire. It would only flash now and again, but not consistently. At times it would try to start/run but would die, at these times the timing light did light up. But soon as the motor stop so did the flashing of the timing light.
After trying to get the motor to refire up for several minutes I went to do other things for 10 min or so. Upon returning I tried starting the motor again but nothing.

Did you swap coils? Id it stayed with the same motor the problem is probably in the distributor...like the pick-up or migh even be the ECM or connection between the dist and ECM.

Another thing to try doing just for the heck of it is pull and clean the big connector. I had troubles with it about year 20 but OK for the last 20. Get an .17 caliber cleaning brush and grease the plug with dielectric grease

Tried several different coils. Switched between motors and end up buying a new one and installing.
This is a old boat (1978) so no ECM.

Thanks, Al

I also have a 1978 searay. Swapped to used TBIV ignition 20 years ago and replaced much of the wiring. Old wiring get bad connection just from oxidation(green patina on copper wires) Old copper wires will grow a black coating and later turn pink. By the time it turns pink, much of the copper has gone away and all that's left is a porous shell. Gotta replace all that old stuff.
