More Global Warming on Great Lakes

Any bets on the number of responses this thread gets? :)

Ice fishing around the western basin has been outstanding. You should see the size of the walleye my brother in law has been catching

Spring will come. Someday. You will know it has arrived when some not so bright fishermen off of Toledo are rescued from the drifting ice. They will complain about their usual loss. The USCG will respond "We save lives NOT pickup trucks."

Just curious, are the freighters charged by the Coast Guard for the ice breaking service, or is it just part of the Coast Guards duties in keeping commerce moving?

The ship captains just believed the president when he said:
““You know, as you know, Mark, we can’t attribute any particular weather event to climate change. What we do know is the temperature around the globe is increasing faster than was predicted even 10 years ago. We do know that the Arctic ice cap is melting faster than was predicted even five years ago. We do know that there have been extraordinarily — there have been an extraordinarily large number of severe weather events here in North America, but also around the globe.”

““And I am a firm believer that climate change is real, that it is impacted by human behavior and carbon emissions. And as a consequence, I think we’ve got an obligation to future generations to do something about it.””

Meanwhile look at the data here that when compared to the models show that there has been no warming for circa 17 years and the computer models worshiped by the administration (wasting your tax dollars) have been dismal in predicting warming:

We are in a Global Waring and cooling cycle right now.
I think it's global COOLING down here.

I'm betting we have a short, wet, Cool summer.
No matter how many Hydrocarbons we emit!

rtribble, Agree it is strange weather, but not climate change and not without precedent.

If you want a more scientific, comprehensive discussion for the Polar vortex than your reference, suggest you check here:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2014/02/01/a-displaced-polar-vortex-and-its-causes/

Further to your reference to a local weather condition in California from Joe Romm, an avid believer in global warming and carbon tax advocate, I suggest that he is cherry picking and if one wants to look at how climate has changed in the overall picture in the US over a long period I suggest that you take a look at the history, not a weather event at a particular location.

Look at this plot for drought history:

If you want to know how tropical cyclones have increased look at this plot
http://policlimate.com/tropical/global_running_ace.png

Look here for the plot on global temperatures since 1979, note that warming has stopped

http://www.drroyspencer.com/wp-content/uploads/UAH_LT_1979_thru_December_2013_v5.6.png

Note this plot shows how sea surface temperatures have flattened since 2003

Finally below is a list of all the warmist claims that have allegedly affected our planet.
Now we need to add polar vortex and California droughts
http://www.numberwatch.co.uk/warmlist.htm

Should we believe all these claims?

"thinkprogress.org"? I will not lower myself to look at that link. Please post something better next time.

In answer to your question, no we shouldn't believe any of these claims on face value as you (and I also) have said there are untold articles out there that will support both sides of this issue and many are indeed questionable at best.
For instance your first example on the polar vortex by Anthony Watts (Watts Up With That).
http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Anthony_Watts
We each can read and reason for ourselfs what we choose to believe.

Lunacy. Man isn't more powerful than the Sun (or nature). We are not God. Get a grip on reality and have some humility.

Picture in the Columbus Dispatch today show a fisherman with a 12 pound walleye he caught last week

Really?

"500 years"???? Who was keeping track back then.

Every time you post, your credibility sinks further and further...

rtribble,

I hope you see the irony in your post about questionable sources, then posting a BOGUS pretend Wiki website which is a smear piece on Anthony Watts whose science website has won numerous awards: (http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/bloggies_2013_bsb_badge.png?w=270&h=390 ) as the best science weblog. This website has had over #9726;174,696,781 views and is "...the world's most viewed climate website".

The actual wiki website is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Watts_(blogger) Did you realize that you posted a BOGUS pretend Wiki URL which copied some facts from the real WIKI site but change the narrative to smear and mocking using words like denier?

It is no wonder the Soros funded "crowd" are afraid of the exposure that Watts' website provides since it uses numerous facts, scientific studies, and data that refute the misinformation of Mann's phony hockey stick , Jones of climate gate (hide the decline,), Al Gore and others. The BOGUS Wiki site includes nasty name calling and childlike mocking of Anthony Watts,Steve McIntire, Lord Monckton, Judith Currey, all respectable scientists or learned people in climate science.

Anthony Watts "Whats Up With That" is a conservative site that sides with the view that man played no role in global warming and is certainly biased in that respect.
The WIKI site you referenced aknowledges there are those within the scientific comunity that do not agree with Anthony Watts views.
Some of those opposing views.
http://www.skepticalscience.com/watts-pbs-newshour.html
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kevin-grandia/debunking-another-climate_b_244903.html

As I've said each of us has the ability to read and draw our own conclusions, but they should look objectively at both sides of the issue. I believe the truth probably lies somewhere between the two opposing views, but each of us can draw our own conclusions.

<<...."I believe the truth probably lies somewhere between the two opposing views, but each of us can draw our own conclusions."....>>

rtribble -

I agree that each of us can draw our own conclusions. Will you also agree that one side should not take their own conclusions and force them upon the other side through government regulations and bans, etc.?

I absolutely believe that if not for the actions of environmentalist and resulting strong regulatory action we would be breathing air of the same quality they are breathing in China right now, but again thats my conclusion and your'e welcome to yours.

Rtribble,
You are absolutely wrong again. If you checked out the WUWT web site (instead of listening to the Huff and Puff Post) you would observe that Watts and many others have NEVER said that man plays NO role in warming. That is a false straw man from the CAGW crowd. Where many disagree with Gore and others is their claim that there is little or no contribution from natural causes or the sun and virtually all the past warming is due to CO2 alone.
Also many at WUWT point out that there is an Urban Heat Island (UHI) in large cities where the huge amounts of concrete, asphalt, and air conditioning adsorb heat and retain the heat longer affecting local weather including the official temperature stations which over report temperature.

Most people acknowledge that CO2 could theoretically contribute to warming, based on Lab experiments, but this has not been proven in the earth's atmosphere and the degree has never been scientifically determined.

As I mentioned in an earlier post the CAGW folks apply a large magnification factor to the known theoretical effect of CO2 in their computer models which over exaggerates the theoretical warming. As I showed above the computer models and the President claims are way above the actual measured temperatures.

Furthermore the lack of cooling for circa 17 years which has been acknowledged even by Jim Hanson and most CAGH scientists has become a huge problem since CO2 concentration has continued to rise. Even the UN IPCC AR5 scientific report has acknowledged the problem and reduced it's predictions for temperature rise. The Management report is in conflict with the scientists

Finally you did not answer how you managed to post a phony WIKI website smearing Watts, WUWT?
