From the first May, 2017 LNM. Sounds familiar.

Worsening shoaling conditions have been reported at the entrance to Moriches Inlet. It is considered unsafe for mariners to attempt to navigate this inlet at any time. Buoys are no longer maintained in this inlet. Shoaling has also been reported in Moriches Bay along the Long Island Intracoastal Waterway in the vicinity of Moriches Bay Buoys 17,18, 21, 26, 27, 28 and 29 extending the entire width of the channel at any tide level. The area from Buoy 17 to 21 is navigable only at high tide. The most severe area of shoaling can be found between buoys 26 and 27 and is less than 3 ft. Shoaling is also reported in the vicinity of Moriches Inlet East Cut Buoys 3E and 5E. Mariners should be aware that the Aids to Navigation in these areas have been deemed unreliable due to shoaling and mariners are advised to seek alternate routes.

Friend went thru last weekend, was not high tide. 32' searay, he said it was tight.
After a few big boys hit it, it will be better.

Brought my boat around from Westbrook Ct. to Lindenhurst last weekend and although cutting in to Plum Gut and taking the inside route back would have been shorter by a lot, I took the sound to the city, then the ocean back so I could avoid all the bays and worries about shoaling. Probably added 25 miles to the trip, but well worth the peace of mind.

Went out to riverhead this am on a buddys boat. Seatow said Moriches is impassable for anything but I/o boats. 3 ' at dead hightide. We went ocean.

As much as we loved boating on Moriches Bay, I'm glad we're now on the Sound, in New Rochelle; no shoaling, only rocks! Hy

Hmm, we have reservations at Westhampton Town Marina for 4 inboard boats in approx 4 weeks. How the heck are we supposed to get there?

Glad I took the scenic route through the City home from Ct. a few weeks back.
The more I read about these things, the more I wish my slip was on the North Shore.

Maybe some big boats dredge a path .... There is a natural channel to the north but the CG refuses to move the buoys to mark it ...

You better check on those west hampton reservations, went by the other day and the whole marina is under construction.
I would be very surprised if they will be open in 4 weeks. But if you can't get there, then not an issue.

I heard they were doing construction. I will reach out to them and find out. Thanks.

This is one weird season. It's like the boating season just won't start. Or is it just me?

Rain expected for most of the weekend, beginning tonight. Why? The showers were supposed to me in April, not the end of May. I want to finish cleaning the cabin and go boating. Somebody sacrifice to the rain gods, please, so they'll leave us alone. Hy

It seems like the last couple of years we have had later springs and longer falls. This rainy weather has been since March. It sucks.

Nope, not just you. Been saying the same to myself for a few weeks. All my friends are running late this year, too. I'm finally launching next Wednesday, but leaving some stuff unfinished that I'll have to address post-launch. It's been a sucky, sucky spring.

Spoke to Frank at Westhampton. He says they will be ready for July 4th, but the grass area won't be open due to planting.

BUT, he thinks it is only 3' at high tide near buoy 26. If this 3' depth is correct, we will cancel. Gonna check with sea tow.

That sucks
We are heading east in August.
Gonna have to pick the day and take the ocean.

Spoke with Sea Tow Moriches last weekend. He's seeing a sandbar across the channel at some lower tides. Says CG may be removing channel markers.

Spoke to Les, at Seatow - great guy!

Unfortunately, this year buoys 26 and 27 only have 3' of water at high tide, making it impassable for most inboard, pod and many larger stern drive boats. He has been trying very hard to get this resolved, but unsuccessful to date. Congressman Lee Zeldin is also trying to help, but to date there is no approved plan to resolve this issue. I think letter to Mr. Zeldin wouldn't hurt. Lost rev for westhampton stores, restaurants, every weekend of summer. This will impact Bath & Tennis too.

There is a second option that allows boaters to bypass buoys 26 and 27, which Les says still has enough water to pass thru at high tide. However, there are no buoys showing the way. This is the route that was marked in I think 2014, that all boaters safely used that year. Les says, if I still have the route or tracks in my GPS, I can try to follow them slowly and carefully. Unfortunately Les has also been unsuccessful in getting this alternate route marked for boaters.

Lastly, there is a third option, but Les, will need to have a Seatow boat available to escort us via the north/south route and there are no guarantees a boat will be available, especially on a busy holiday weekend.

Of course there is always a 4th option, which I think would be crazy. Go outside and come in the Shinnecock Inlet and head west. Easy run, but a ton of 5mph zones. I guess if it's your first time that way, you can gauk at all the beautiful homes on the way to Westhampton.

Even when we run further east, inside is always the backup plan if ocean is not good.

Net-net - this sucks!!

Is the 2014 route the one that run up towards the inlet and then back North?
I have that one marked I think.

Definitely sucks - boaters pay alot and get no respect.

I believe 26 and 27 are east of where the east channel from the inlet brings you, so that would not help. I think what is being discussed is leaving the E-W channel and veering NE past the CG station.

But when that was used a few years back, I think it was marked.

I can clear 3', but it's going to mean I have a very short window to get through there.
