Anybody have a handle on Moriches Bay navigation conditions? I heard shoaling was very bad.

Planning on running from babylon to the peconic this June. Have not been in these waters since 2009, so I need to get updated on the conditions and such since Sandy. Can you advise if I am going to have issues running through Moriches Bay or do I need to run the coastline to Shinnicock?

How are the inlets (FI and Shinnicock?)

Draft is 24"
 
Shinnecock is fine. I haven't been to/thru Moriches in years so my knowledge is dated.
 
Ran tru last September . It was the best I've ever seen and almost a straight line . No dog legs or jogs . Not to say it's still true .

I was out in Moriches on Sat., you will have no problems with a 24" draft. Stay within the buoys or you could have trouble. It looks very shallow on both sides out of the channel near the Coast Guard Station. Its deceiving though because the water is very clean, you can see the bottom, but its not as low as it looks. The dogleg at red 26 is no longer there, its pretty much a straight shot.

Any further updates?
Got a group of boats heading east 7/2 and they want to do the inside.
I prefer outside with my draft, but said I would follow at high tide slowly if they do inside.
 
I too have a group of boats going thru Moriches on 7/3. Would appreciate an update..
 
I guess guys just plan to be their for high tide ...

That was a given.

I am not leading, I am following.
I also am not going thru on plane, will do the slow troll thru, even though I think on plane drafts less, i just have not been thru since they changed the channel. I used to follow my old cookie trail, but won't have that on this boat, it's never been thru.

Montauk Highway (CR80) Bridge, mile 0.9, across Quantuck Creek is in progress. There will be temporary platform installed under the bridge and will
reduce the vertical clearance by 3 feet. The project will be completed by October 31, 2014. Mariners are advised to exercise caution when transiting the
area.

Does bridge still open?
 
Unless you are visiting someone north of Montauk Highway, this should have no affect on your trip. This bridge is way up the creek and does not open.
 
Correction,,,if you look at a map, it is Montauk Hwy,,,,heading East on the inside you will not have to go under that bridge. Check out your charts & a road map.
 
I see that, my bad. I saw QUANTUCK CREEK and I know that is creek by Westhampton.
Should be ok.

Still no moriches reports?

Ok, what was the best time for high tide again? Wasn't it like 1 hour past Moriches coast guard station high tide?

Getting nervous about this run but i know it's unfounded and will be fine!

Dave, we always try to hit (probably not the best choice of words) it at coast guard high tide or within one hour on either side of high tide. But, I too would like to get some very recent local knowledge.

Don, you forget this boat has no nuts! No shafts either. It's like 2 saggy hanging hunks of metal under the boat!
