New Coast Guard Fee

Interesting, I just renewed my documentation last Month and there was no fee, it must be new.
I wonder too why it must be done every year.

The OP said that the fee doesn't go into effect until Nov. 10.

It's a title. Why does it need to be renewed and a new certificate issued if ownership has not changed? No other kind of title from DMV expires.

True, you don't have to renew your DMV title, but you do have to renew your car license every year and here in VA, that is more than the $26 CG fee. They do give us the option to renew for 2 years, but at double the cost, less a buck or two.

In NY, my boat is documented,
AND I have to register it and pay every 3 years with DMV.

They can eliminate all the processing, printing, mailing by not having them expire. That would be a real cost savings. Charge for initial documentation or to send a replacement certificate or for an abstract.

Mostly because I am sure like the FAA who used to not require renewal, you lost control of the data base of what is active and what is not. In an age of heighten security the government wants to know if it sank, sitting on blocks or actually active.

Now this is strange but I just got my $26.00 check back from the Coast Guard. They said that I did not have to pay it since I submitted my application for renewal before November 10.

They were nice enough to point out that next year I would have to pay.

I could have sworn that the original letter said that it was due for all boats who's document expired after November 10. My Document says that it expires November 30 so I figured that was after November 10 and sent the money.

That was nice of them to return it. I'm sure if they returned yours, they probably sent back quite a few more.

But you may renew prior to the expiration date. Just did it and dodged the bullet until next year.

Now with all the postage spent on returning checks the fee will go to $30...I'm still surprised they didn't implement this sooner

knowing a bit about government paperwork, I'd bet it's gotta cost more that $26 to process the $26. . ..!
