I got a letter from the CG yesterday which states that any renewal of the USCG Certificate of Documentation expiring after November 10th must be accompanied by $26.00.

Beat me to it. Although my taxes are supposed to pay for this.......Cheap price to pay for a completely dysfunctional government.

I honestly wish I knew where the money was going. I doubt to the USCG. That is a shame if true.

I don't think Greg's an ass. I don't understand his retort.

My retort is this. 26 bucks to document your boat. Your documentation represents a recorded title among other things. You can't even record the title to a house for 26 bucks. Heck, 26 bucks is about the tag fee for an annual tag for your car in Georgia. It is one half the price of most state registrations. Most people burn 26 bucks in fuel before they get to the first buoy. I'll bet you have 26 bucks of beer on most boats. I'm willing to bet 26 bucks does not even cover the costs involved. Need I say more?

Whoa!

The $26.00 is to renew your document. It costs a lot more to initially document it or to transfer it to a new owner.

Renewal has always been free but documentation by the time you fire up the "Documentation Lady" to do it for you can run several hundred bucks.

I'm with geebee on this. I agree, $26 doesn't even cover the cost of handling the renewal paperwork. I'm surprised it has been free for so many years.

Well if you feel that strong, write a letter to the editor of your local paper complaining about the costs to document your boat......see how much sympathy you get.

There are some very timely threads regarding the CG that helps explain this fee. With all of the costs involved in rescue efforts and the fact that the CG budget does not keep pace, where else can the funding come from? If you say "John Q Public", then you win the prize!

Need you say more? Actually, yes. None of your arguments are at all relevant. The cost of beer, fuel, automobile registration, home title recording deal with the issue.

As my labor law prof told me when I got lazy one week, "You're capable of much better. I'll be looking for it."

WOW...... No need to get into NBR........all the same crap here

Give the gov't an inch here and an inch there and pretty soon the gov't will be funding orphanages for Un's love children in North Korea.

Does the Coast Guard keep every penny they collect in fees?

Do you really think the documentation fees have any bearing on SAR resource budgets?

Well if you don't like the fee, why don't you state register it?

"the documentation lady" referred to above. Another ripoff. Why give someone several hundred dollars to fill out a few forms when you can do it yourself for about $80? These so called documentation services are a huge money making scam. They've got buyers believing they have to use them to get financing.
