A buddy was saying he read there will be no fluke (summer flounder) allowed this season at all. Can anyone confirm this?

AJ

There will be a NY season but they haven't made if final yet.

This process is just killing off the big breeders and killing a percentage of the shorts that are thrown back.

Management my a$$.

Robyns Nest, I do believe the NY regs are final. Zero summer fluke; zero season !

If you look at the second link posted by DeeVee there is a Special Note : "Special note for summer flounder (fluke) and scup: The 2008 regulations for summer flounder (fluke) and scup have not yet been approved. Please check this page for updates. There will be a recreational fluke season in 2008." We'll see I guess

8 fish rb2@gr5t 18 inches , with a season of May 24th through Sept. 7th.

Looks good to me ?

giolic, is that confirmed? Where did you read that?

Bob, 18" is an inch and a half shorter than last seasons regulations.

AJ

I'd take 18" in NY waters. Still too big IMHO but they are out there.

They should allow a 6 bag limit, 5 over 16", under 18", and one over 22" as a trophy fish.

This way you reduce the mortality rate of the throw backs and you don't single out the breeders.

The current rules force us to single out the breeders.

Wow. In MD, the legal size was 14" last year. I haven't been to NJ in a few years.

I just checked the NYS regs for Fluke...here's what's posted...

Length: 19.5 Creel limit: 4 Season: closes 9/17/07
Special Conditions:
Summer flounder may not have heads or tails removed or be otherwise cleaned, cut, filleted, or skinned until brought to shore, with the following exception: the white side fillet or white skin only of a legal size fluke may be removed to use as bait. The carcass of the fluke with dark side completely intact must be retained for inspection of size limit and counts against the possession limit.

Perry, those numbers are for last years season. Still waiting on final reg for the '08 season.

thanks...I thought it was too good to be true. DOH!

A total joke.

Commercial guys get 14" fish we get nothing.

THe head boats are on their way to becoming extinct too.

Folks,
I just checked the DEC site and i think it's been approved. I do not see any *notes or comments...

Summer flounder May 15 - Sept 1 20.5" TL 4

Good fishing...

What are those "Head Boats" Robyns Nest is talking about?

Perry, does that mean a sport fisherman can keep a flounder if its 20.5" long or longer?

First, that means your Fluke is much larger than the Pacific Sole.
Second, it must mean that the fishery is being depleted. How do they know? Do they take Samples? How deep do you fish for Fluke? I know they are bottom dwellers, but at what depth do you fish for them?
There must be a helluva lot of folks out there catching Fluke?

In AK, the Halibut had to be 32" for a commercial guy to keep them. We called them little fellers 'Chickens'!
You cant control what your gonna bring up, but they all die if you bring them up.
Sometimes I'd filet them and hide the meat in my Cooler on board. I'd cut the meat into sandwich size chunks, put it in between two pieces of bread with some lettuce and Onion and call it a Halibut sandwich.
It seem'd like such a shame to throw a small Halibut back when it was gonna die. Why not throw the scraps back and keep the meat?
I'm probably very lucky I never got caught in Five years of doing that.

Head Boats=Party Boats

Perry, does that mean a sport fisherman can keep a flounder if its 20.5" long or longer? Yes, but I would make sure it was over 20.5"

Fluke are bottom dwellers, are easily caught in Bays and Ocean. They readily take bait and artificials. Although you can catch Fluke in Bays, most of the really large fish are in the ocean.

Fluke are heavily fished and are on the rebound. You need to cull through alot of chickens (shorts) to get to the keepers. Once a fish is considered depleted then there's a 10-year management plan that's supposed to help bring the numbers back up to a sustainable level.

I don't know how they monitor the recreational or commercial fishery landings...

I like to fish for fluke from 35'-70+' feet of water. Nothing like pulling in a 12lber from 65'...large Fluke put up a nice battle.

I agree with your comment regarding boating short fish...I hate throwing back fish that probably won't make it, it also makes easy meals for other non-food species like Spiny Dogfish (sand sharks) thus making more of them...bad cycle.

Fluke are a great fish to introduce fishing to kids. When I have kids on the boat I give them each jobs so they can learn to work together and help out. The angler yells out 'Net Boy' and its up to their partner to assist. Once in the boat and out of the net and hook out, the kids need to measure and either release (in a nice way) or put'm on ice...

As far as keeping shorts...I fortunately or not am friends with a couple of DEC officers and they board me a couple of times a year. The last thing I need to get caught by them and be made an example of...There's plenty of fish around so no need to be illegal. Its more important to me to be on the water than to bring home fish. If it was about money I would sell the boat and go to the fish market. Probably save me 10k per year.
Tight lines,
Perry

Perry, Back in the 50s and early 60s I would fish for Fluke from a wood boat with a small kicker that we would rent from "Pops" in far Rockaway. 20" would have been a big fish then. Dont remember any size limits back then.
