Russian Fighters Buzz Navy Ship

Do you think they would have done this if we had a real POTUS who wasn't a spineless community organizer? How do you think any other POTUs would have responded? I think those two planes would be at the bottom of the ocean.

Nothing more than a little sabre rattling. Not really all that uncommon years ago. Now that the Putin wants to reignite the cold war expect more of it.

I would have splashed only one of them. Let the other one return to base and tell the story.

I wonder what would happen if the US ship announced live fire training.

YEAH....RIGHT.

[rant]

Under this administration, you would have had to wait 13 hours to get permission to fight your ship before just giving up. After giving up, if you were lucky you would be killed, branded a coward, posthumously court martialed, denied Arlington and your family would have to move to Butte, Montana to forego the shame.

The only difference if you actually fought your ship because you cared about your country and crew is you would be moving to Butte, Montana with them.

Like it or not, we have 2 generations of officers who don't know how to fight a war. No knock on them. Like anything, you have to be taught to do something right to do it right yourself. Bowing in the face of the enemy is not doing things right.

That would presume we have a CIC interested in a proficient and capable Navy.

Well...yes...there is that!

I expect putin expects hillie to win and her inability to react to security matters would have the country in a panic. I think he has plans for the future and he's setting things up.

Any comment from mccain or the vp?

Shoulda sent up a couple fighters.

Seems like it was a harmless fly by.. What would the repercussions been of shooting one down because of a simple fly-by?..

Had to look it up. The Baltic Sea is almost landlocked and a little toooo close to mother russia.

Why do they have a destroyer in there anyway. How big of a presence does the navy have?

LOL

You guys are to funny!

This stuff was not an uncommon occurrence back in the day on both sides and nobody was shooting down planes right and left then.

Thank God our leaders, in both parties, have cooler more thoughtful heads and are far wiser than to get into an international dick measuring contest with another super power over nothing than the average Internet poster would seem to be so ready to do.

As to the "30 feet" comment, based on that video, somebody needs to get their eyes calibrated.

Because we have NATO allies on the Baltic. Of course we could just hand them over like the Ukraine and split the alliance apart because being in it would mean nothing.

Ship Captains are very limited in command scope. The hay have been for some time. I offer the USS Cole (DDG 67) on 12 October 2000 as a prime example.

You mean Ship's Duck not Captain. As in sitting duck.

I think there is a subtle difference in the scope of interference. A "Bear" can carry nukes. A destroyer does not. Maybe we should treat the Bears a little differently?

Never knew if they did or did not. The capability is there.

You are correct this stuff used to happen all the time and there exists a memoradum of understanding between the US and Russia on the protocols for such actions. These protocols were not followed in this instance, the two most notable, running in an attack echelon and most notably, NOT responding on guard frequency which all aircraft should monitor in intl airspace. The last time a Russian fighter did not respond on guard, he was shot down, by the Turks and the pilot killed. You would think they would have learned their lesson. What happened here is not every day occurance because it was outside the agreed to norms of conduct.
