Well, over 1600 new active topics...yikes! I'll never get them all read....

Thanks to everyone who has been concerned for my well being. You guys and gals are great!!!!

I've had quite an adventure for the last 6 weeks. First, my computer was so messed up, I decided to replace it. Yesterday I received my new ACER desktop. It seems to be just fine.

While I was trying to figure out my old computer, I began hallucinating, thinking that people such as my kids were conspiring against me. They got so concerned that they took me to the ER.

Now most of you know that I have always enjoyed my Black Velvet in moderation. However, it seems that I became diabetic, causing the hallucinations. Alcohol and diabetes do not mix! After a few days treatment at the hospital, my kids decided that I needed to go to a "28 day" rehab facility. Now I am a graduate of "Drugs and Alcohol 101"!!! I also learned how to eat a more diabetic-friendly diet and to test my blood sugar.

All in all, this has been a highly informative experience and currently my health is 100%. I've even lost a few pounds [:-bouncy]

So now I need to get my life on a new track and this includes boating. Does anyone know of any boating clubs or groups which are non-drinking? Maybe a group in the delta which embraces Bill W's philosophy? If so, please email me at boaterbetsy*at*gmail.com or send me a PM.

I don't expect to be using my boat for a while. It is needed some fixing anyway.

Again, thanks for all of the support and Bless You All!

Good to hear you're back Flutter. Congrats on the new computer and new outlook on life. Just stay away from the Delta Loop on weekends for a while. ;)

I am pretty good at wiring so if you need some help next month I might be able to give you a hand.

Great to see you are back!

Stay well, it wasn't the same without you!

Flutterby, glad your back and doing better, however having been prediabetic about a year ago I had to go to classes to learn how to adjust my food and beverage intake. I did not have to give up alcohol, neither do you, infact it may help you and they say if you do drink don't stop, just remember everything in moderation. I made adjustments and my DR said that my blood suger was back in all normal ranges and that what ever I am doing to keep it up.

The 2 biggest things are EXERCISE and the reduction of CARBS, (breads, pastas, sugars)!

Do you exercise enough?

Question: "What advice can we give to patients with diabetes regarding alcohol consumption? Modest amounts of wine appear to be healthful for the heart. Evidence suggests that moderate alcohol improves insulin sensitivity. The American Diabetes Association's position seems to be `If you don't drink don't start, but if you drink don't stop.' What is an expert's opinion?"

Answer: A number of epidemiological studies have found an association between light to moderate alcohol amounts and decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke in persons without diabetes.

The greatest benefit of alcohol appears to fall within study quintiles that include people drinking 15–30 g/day of alcohol, which can be considered "light to moderate drinking." One drink of alcohol is commonly defined as 12 oz of beer, 5 oz of wine, or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (hard liquor), each the equivalent of about 15 g of alcohol.

Studies suggest a "J" or "U" shaped curve: a small amount of alcohol per day is better than either no alcohol or a large amount of alcohol. The type of alcoholic drink doesn't seem to matter. Studies also report an increase in insulin sensitivity from moderate amounts of alcohol. Finally, studies indicate that light to moderate amounts of alcohol do not raise blood pressure, whereas chronic excessive amounts (greater than 30–60 g/day) do.

In people with diabetes, moderate alcohol consumption does not acutely affect glycemic control, and epidemiological studies indicate that moderate alcohol consumption for people with diabetes is associated with:

A decrease in coronary heart disease (it may be one of the few ways to increase HDL cholesterol),

A decreased risk for CHD, and

A reduced risk of mortality.

Sounds like a wonderful therapy so far!

No, I do not exercise enough, especially when it is cold, dark and wet in the winter. Add that and booze and it is a very bad combination. Since I promised my kids I would no longer imbibe, I'll just have to take my chances and do without that wine!!!!

Hi Liz, glad you're back and feeling better! It was lonely around here without you, for sure. I wish I did know of a non-drinking club. The ones we're in are ok, and I really like the people, but give 'em a few drinks and it's like we're in high-school again! I'm known to imbibe, but jeez - I stopped dancing on tables in my early 20's for cryin out loud!

Anyway, keep safe and healthy and get caught up!

welcome back, you were missed. Best of luck with your new life plan.

Hi Liz

Liz, very glad to hear you're okay! Now that you've taken your 28 day safe drinkers class and have learned how to safely draw blood, you may now settle down and catch up on a little light reading. Not that you've missed THAT much...;)

Welcome back to the club.

and if you need support, you have my number. roy

I'm a diabetic and after being sick during and after drinking I've had to give it up to.

What a relief, Flutter! Now that you say what happened, I understand better why I was so burdened while you were away! I quit in an expression of support for some others who had to. I don't miss it a bit and suggest a clean break while your emotions support it. Computers and even boats will pass, PEOPLE are what counts. Get strong, be encouraged, we love you on all coasts!
