Bill I trying to get my user name fixed, I am optimistic though!!! I made it to BE this year and I think I might as well get my name right at some point. NO plans to plunge :-) at list not in the Hudson. Maybe in FL in February.

I will be in a classroom for the next few days getting CEUs for my NJ license. If you see me posting you know I'm bored out of my brain!

I understand why some folks are not happy with HM decision and do applaud MYC for accepting outside vessels. However, and firstly, there was plenty of warning of the impending storm and whoever chose not to have their boats pulled and ride it out should not expect another marina who you are not currently supporting to take on your liability. I have to say that I would be really upset if transient boats broke loose and damaged my boat in my home port. As for the larger boat issue, my guess is that HM would gladly pull any of those if they felt that the docks and others in the water would be in danger having them on the water. If your home marina is only secure during calm conditions then you may want to consider other options as I think we all agree that this will not be the last storm that rolls through.

How will additional storms that we all know will materialize, effect SPBM with the deeper water now that they have started dredging??? Other than having 100 foot + size yachts there, will it increase or decrease the size of the waves????

Hank

This is a storm where boats that were on land faired much worse than those in the water. Of course if a marinas dock system failed then those boats were damaged as well. IMO the key to survival was solid docks with sufficiently high pilings so that the storm surge didn't send the docks over the piling tops.

Hank, I get it, Haverstraw made a business decision. MYC made a decision based on helping fellow boaters.

IMHO, the difference between how the two reacted reflects the mind sets of each facility.

Like rommer said, boats on land fared much worse than those in the water, so that is a moot point. When boaters needed Haverstraw to step up to the plated, they pulled an A Rod and struck out.

FWIW - I just remembered that Haverstraw took a good 4 or 5 days before the storm was scheduled to hit before making a final decision. I had daily calls with the office trying to sort out a spot and was held in limbo till the day before when the final no can come decision was made.

Yep, I went over a few days before Sandy and was told that they would let me know. The day before the storm hit, I got a call saying that they were not taking any transients.

I went to MYC to visit rommer, and THEY told me I should come over there, I didn't have to ask them.

Well....as always we are all entiteled to our opinions and I do agree that MYC did a great deed for fellow boaters. They took a big risk and got away with it and it all worked out. I suspect if transient boats did damage to members boats there would be an uproar and things would be different next time. In my opinion, the boats on land issue is hindsight as I didnt hear too many people believing the devestation would be that significant to blocked boats. I think more peole stayed in the water because they did not want to end the season prematurely, (me included) got nervous as the storm approached and were looking for plan "B". I will also still believe that your choice of marinas should include protection in good and bad weather. I dont think so many will be lucky enough to find refuge at MYC next year as there once again is a waiting list to get in.

I thought we rested the case. As a member of HM they pulled my boat out in a VERY short notice, they asked me the week before (disnt know about the storm) when i want the boat out and i said NEVER. I called them Thursday at 2:30 pm and asked to take the boat out and they did by Friday afternoon. They even blocked it extra high per my request so i can work on my rudders.
It is great that we all can share something positive About our experiance with our marinas. May them all recover, be profitable and stay friendly. Lets accept that every marina have different circumstances!!!

Now who is comming on February 3rd to see some crazy people swimming???

Allen-You are new here. One thing you will learn is that NOTHING is ever rested. haha. I dont think anybody is bashing the other. We all know each other pretty well and respect one anothers opinions. This is how we get to page 26.
