Can I treat you to some coffee and a donut? "On me"!!! I think there are still 1-2 open slips that can fit a 15 foot beam!!! :-)

Sorry guys, MYC is the safest and nicest around.

Haverstraw would not take transients for Sandy, which puts them way down the list for me. You guys can tout HYC all you want, but when area boaters needed a place to go, they said "NO". Not very neighborly...

MYC took transients and made it through the storm unscathed.

Mike I was surprised to hear Haverstraw wouldn't take transients during the storm I'm sure they had their reasons (like maybe they were concerned the additional boats would be or cause additional damage) regardless I still have to say they are the nicest marina in the area! Does MYC have a pool or a really nice restaurant NO. I understand different strokes for different folks and if I didn't have a boat with such a deep draft maybe I would feel differently but at this time I wouldn't consider any other marina on the Hudson. I hope to move to the Sound at some point, I would love move the boat to Norwalk Cove Marina in the mean time Haverstraw is my home and I'm very happy to be there! In a few years when the kids are out of the house I can spend the weekends in CT without any concern but for now I need to stay close for the family.

Dave, we'll have to agree to disagree.

If I wanted a pool, I could join Haverstraw's pool, it isn't a big deal for me. If I want to swim, I go to Croton or Bowline.

IMHO, PBM is much better than Haverstraw, it offers everything I need, a short walk to the boat, a beach, picnic area, awesome wooden docks, and an on-site, attentive, friendly, helpful staff.

The only downside is living by the tides, but so far, it's not so bad.

Any good businessman understands his limitations, and does not try to exceed them. Obviously HM understood how many vessels that could safely manage during Sandy, and stayed within those limits. Their first responsibility is to their existing cliental, and it appears as if they served them well.

They claim to have the 'safest spot' and it clearly is not true. Boats and docks were damaged in Haverstraw, not so in MYC.

+1

Even with Haverstraw moving big boats out they still had a bunch of damage. MYC had some infrastructure damage but as I recall all the docks stayed right where they belonged.

They sure have their collective act together at MYC.

Under normal condition Haverstraw is one of the safest marinas however this was not normal conditions and they had the forethought to recognize this! I had spoken to other marinas both before and after the storm frankly they thought I was just being paranoid and they were surprised by the outcome of Sandy. Haverstraw saw the writing on the wall and made a decision to protect their customers and marina. Lets say you went to Haverstraw and sustained damage and or your boat helped rip off a section of dock would you thank them for taking you in or would you be bushing them for not being more protected? The way I see it they were stuck between a rock and a hard place. They did what they thought was best for them and their customers I respect their decision.

I was on the hard and still had some damage and every boat around me sustained significant damage the yard did what they could to protect everyone but somethings are beyond anyone's control and all we can only sit back and wait to see the outcome.

Mike I'm not a member of the pool either I tend to go to Bowline or Croton to swim as well but the freedom to do this as I please and not have to wait for the tides is priceless. I thought I might hate the long walk to my boat but I had the longest walk to my boat in SPBM while this walk is a little further it's a small price to pay for freedom! I bought a Jetski just so I could get away from my dock at low tide while I was at SPBM only to find I couldn't even take the jetski out without sucking weeds into the impeller. This year I plan to sell the jetski I really have no need for it. I really enjoyed most of my stay at SPBM that's why I stayed as long as I did!

I'm very happy that you and your friends like where you are I think that's great! Someday you too will get tired of waiting on the tides and make a move, be it MYC or Haverstraw I hope you are as happy as you are at PBM!

Spring is around the corner and there is much to do many of us have repairs to make and concerns as to whether or not there will be a dock to return to. I wish everyone the best of luck with the up coming season and hope to see you all in the Spring enjoying yet another season!

Dave, I understand why Haverstraw did what they did, and MYC could have done the same thing, BUT, MYC stepped up to the plate and took in about 20 boats from PBM. When I asked them why, they said, "that's what neighbors do".

I can't praise MYC enough, the took us in, and let us stay until PBM could start hauling - which was a couple of weeks. They delayed their season closing until we were all out.

They took us in, no questions, and treated us like family. They are are a fantastic group of people and I can't thank them enough.

I also have to agree about MYC. I waited till the last minute and moved on Sunday as the storm was starting to wind up. I was stuborn and was going to stay at PBM. Due to some of the memebers insisting on my moving I decided to move. It was the wisest thing I have ever done. I would probably be one of those out looking for a new boat since there is no way I would have survived in my slip. The crew at MYC assisted everyone with securing there boats and even had people watching them during the storm. They went out of there way to insure we were all safe. That is something you dont find in many marinas. I know Haverstraw not only would not take transients but they also told all there large yachts that they had to leave. They also did that During Irene as well.

I have to echo everything Bruce and Mike said. MYC wouldn't even accept payment of the the transient fee's which we had agreed to pay when we first got there.

They truly are a top shelf organization that understands what boating is all about. I have nothing against Haverstraw but they are a business first and boaters second. Luckily for us, MYC has their priorities straight!

I've talked to several of the storm transplants rb2@gr5t MYC and we have talked about some summertime event to show our appreciation.

Where the heck did the large boats who where told to leave Haverstraw go?

I don't think it is true. I have seen the big boats there the morning after the storm.

I know some of the people from the peninsula who move their boats to main dock for winter. I did see most of them there the day after, maybe all of them I really didn't take that good of a look.

I don't know about Sandy but for Irene they def. kicked out larger boats and many went upstream to Roundout Creek. There were a decent number of large boats anchored out in the river just north of Indian Point when we went up river to Roundout our self.

I was always told that Bob Wheeler feels the larger boats are too much of a strain on the docks. Seems to me that if that is the case then perhaps he should install higher quality docks that can handle the load of offering slips to bigger, ie more than 40 foot boats.

I don't know anything about that. I was.at Haverstraw for 10 years and saw many storms but nothing like these hurricanes or whatever it is they are called. But I don't think in general any marina or building around here is really built with being able to withstand a hurricane in mind. I do know Bob and I think he is a good guy. I don't even know if it would be his call on structure of the marina. He does not own it.

Did Haverstraw find the old gas pumps and remove them? I'd hate to hit one on the way in for fuel.
