I am planning on spending some time on the hook in Strathmere just south of Ocean City, N.J. I am just looking for some local info on the area. I know about the Dauville Inn and Franks but I am looking for some ideas on anchoring off the ICW in that area. My wife and I boated this area over 20 years ago but that was in a 21' speed boat not a 40+ Sedan Bridge. The boat is euipped for extended cruising. Any help or comments would be appreciated.
Regards Bill

2nd.year boating in South Jersey [Avalon]. We have a Mainship and like to cruise. Unless you like running in the ocean, the ICW is not boater friendly for larger vessels. As for overnight on the hook, let me know what you find?? Other than tidal being an issue, I think the Green heads, and everyone knows what they are will be a big issue. We are always looking for new places to "anchor out"

North of AC the ICW is not too bad in terms of water depth. Although the weekend traffic can be insane at times. South of AC is another story. Bridge waits, and LOTS of shoaling. Stick VERY close to the markers and even then low tide can be exciting at best.

I draw about 3'6" loaded. I have been on the ICW south of my port Tuckerton (Little Egg) years ago. Yes it's slow going but that is what I want. We want to take our time and hopefully enjoy the way. I almost forgot about the greenheads, they can be really nasty! I have been reading some of the Jersey ICW cruising guides and feel we can do this, especially because I have plenty of time. There is a fair amount of deep water just south of the Ocean City 69th street bridge and it's fairly wide there this is where I am thinking about going on the hook. Regards Bill

I spent about seven years boating that area, and don't remember ever seeing anyone spend a night on the hook, north of Cape May, or south of Barnegat bay. Plenty of people anchor for the day off Corsons Inlet State park, which is right across the inlet from the Deauville. People also anhcor for the day at 'low tide island' which is down by Hereford inlet. Besides those two, I can't think of anywhere else north of Cape May harbor. Yoy get anywhere outside the channel, between Ocean City and Sea Isle City, at low tide, and you're in the mud - even in a very small boat - which makes anchoring impossible. There is one nice channel, once you get past Sea Isle, close to Townsends inlet, off to the west. I'd have to look at a chart to be more precise. I'm pretty sure that one stays deep all the way back to where it ends, at the GS Parkway. Lots of water skiers, and a few fisherman, so it might not be the quietest spot, but it's the only one I can think of where you could anchor a boat your size during a low tide.

Billy,

I am moving from Barnegate Bay (Key Harbor Marina) to Viking Yachting Center in Bass River. You mentioned you are in Great Bay, I'd be curious where? I'm kinda nervous about the Greenheads - I've passed through great bay and not been a big fan of those things. I always found them really bad between great bay and AC in the ICW. Are they bad up the Bass river?

I was thinking of moving to Viking and spoke with a rep at the AC boat show, she swore that the greenheads were not bad at the marina.

After spending 18 years with greenheads, on a lagoon off Tuckerton Creek (which is not that far from Viking), I'm not sure if I believe them.

I didn't ask about the no-seeum gnats though...
