So have an issue with my port side shifter control. When running on plane, regardless of timedistance when I throttle down to idle speed and go to place back in neutral it is very hard to shift. I feel as though I am having to put way too much pressure on the handle to engage neutral. This does not happen with my starboard shifter.

1998 Larson 290 Cabrio
Twin Volvo-Penta 5.0 GL duo prop outdrives

Thoughts?

If it has a shift interrupter switch that may be malfunctioning

You have only one helm station, correct? Sometimes the second station will get into a bind with the first.
I don't think that as a Volvo, it will have the interrupt switch. At least it's my understanding that by the 1990s the MerC Alpha was the only one with interrupt.

Disconnect the cables at the offending engine. See how freely:
1. The Control Mechanism and
2. The Engine's Shifting operate

Those steps should narrow your search.

Friend's Silverton with dual controls was very balky and replacing cables didn't fix it. Neither did work on the outdrives. A new Control Unit did correct the problem.

You will need a new shift cable, Happen to me last season. It would not go into neutral easily for a couple of seasons until it finally stuck in forward.

New cable or OHB's oiler system is in order. Volvo uses a clutch mechanism as opposed to a shift interrupt system.

Not being familiar with volvo's shift system...if it has a lower(outdrive) shift cable and a remote(helm) shift cable, disconnect the lower shift cable and try shifting by habd and see if the stiffness is located there. Do the same with the remote shift cable.

Just looking where the problem is.

If I can ask just what is the OHB Oiler system or method?
Thanks,
Bill
