Anyone have any experience with underwater lights? Especially the LED Abyss Lite versions, They are surface mountable (except for the power wire that only requires a 3/16 hole). My friend is looking to out them on his sport fish in the spring and we are researching them now. He would rather go with the surface mount over the through hull that typically need 1 inch or bigger holes.

What wattage is good? The beam is 14ft. 3 lights?

good question - I am watching this thread too - I ran wires but couldnt pay $600 for the lights....waiting for something more cost effective.

I have seen some that mount to your trim tabs with a bracket so you dont have to drill big holes but they aint cheap either.

i'm thinking about it, although not that hard... i will never drill a hole in the boat unless i REALLY have to, and that's with solid heavy non cored hull. can't imagine drilling a hole in a cored transom jsut for lights... when i install lights, it will be surface mount and the wire will go up the transom and will go thru above WL.

the trim tab mounted lights, available from "SPAM marine" :-) are nice, but $800 from what i recal..

I looked at 12 volt pond lights but they dont have much in terms of brightness

Pascal,

Surface mount lights would require you to drill into the transom in some fashion, why are you opposed to drilling a 2" or so hole in the transom? The lips/flanges on the underwater lights are quite large, so sealing the hole and keeping it sealed is not a problem.

i know, a lot of people drill their boats... i don't like it ! the fewer holes the better... can't give you a technical reason, just my gut feeling...

surface mount means just a couple of screws or just some epoxy or even 5200

Installed a deepsea 120v HID in my 36's transom. No coring, properly drilled and sealed, love it.

Well, the surface mounted lights don't have the same effect. They do attract fish. With the surface mounted lights, you get a lot of reflection. Also, with underwater lights, the light waves penetrate the water. Surface mounts really don't penetrate through the water.

by surface mount, i mean mounted on the surface, underwater. i don't mean above water level

You may want to do a google search for trim tab lights if you have trim tabs. I would paste the site but I think that breaks the rules. The companies that offer them will pop up on the google search. Good luck with it.

yeah, that's what i was mentioning (SPAM marine ... ) $900 a pair, no thanks.. and i don't buy from spammers...

Anybody install the 12v LED transom lights? Looks easy, but I wonder how much light they give off.

Am I going to have to be the guinea pig?

This is probably a stupid question but what do these lights do?? Are they used for attracting fish at night while fishing or for night diving or what?

birdog,

I would think there are different reasons why someone would want lights back there: Night Fishing, Diving, Swimming or just for Ambiance.

There's a member here named Mike Ryan who haas LEDs under his swim platform. The search function isn't working, but I'm sure he's got a photo somewhere...

Guys I have the HID's in the transom. They really light up the water... A buddy has the leds there not as bright as the HID's

They were installed at delivery... No leaks no issues... I got them from UNDERWATERLIGHTS

I got pics in and out of the water if anyone wants to see...

Rob, how much of a difference between the LED's and the HID's? I'm looking at current draw, and the LCD's are minimal
