Effort to Preserve Cal Boating Continues after Budget Deal in Sacramento. With the finalization of a state budget to be signed by Governor Schwarzenegger on February 20, RBOC is continuing its vigilance to prevent the adoption of Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposal to eliminate the independent Cal Boating and to merge its functions into State Parks.
RBOC is ensuring the elimination of Cal Boating is not within the flurry of last-minute budget
bill amendments made the morning of February 19. Even if the termination of Cal Boating is
not in the budget, efforts to preserve the department will continue. Stated RBOC President Dave Breninger: “The Governor’s proposal to eliminate the independent Cal Boating could be submitted immediately as a formal reorganization proposal. This would trigger a 3-month period after which Cal Boating could be gone.”
The independently-funded, stand-alone Cal Boating provides accountability, transparency and
leadership regarding the collection and use of boater-derived taxes and fees, and the best use
of these funds for programs benefiting boating. This state’s more than 3 million boating
enthusiasts, who support a $17 billion per year boating industry, must have a department with
a Director whose primary focus is boating.
RBOC continues to urge boaters to contact the Governor and their legislators in opposition to
the proposed elimination of Cal Boating. For the latest developments – and how you can help –

RBOC is a nonprofit boater advocacy organization that works to protect and enhance the
interests of the state’s recreational boaters before the legislative and executive branches of
state and local government. RBOC is in its 41st year as a statewide organization which since
1968 has continued its commitment to promoting the enjoyment, protection, and responsible
use of our waterways."
