Volvo Penta XDP Service Bulletin - Bellows

If your dealer told you about it, he should be able to give you a copy of the Service Bulletin or at least give you the Service Bulletin number.

I haven't had any luck "Google-ing" it either.....

Let me see what I can get.

Guys,

The drives on my 2007 vessel (w/twin 8.1 OSI-XDPs) were both replaced last season under warrantee ....at about 116 hours. This came just after Volvo discovered that the original "REPLACEMENT" bellows were ineffective at resolving the water ingress issue, at least on some boats in the field. I supposedly am one of the first to have the new and improved/3rd generation bellows on my new XDP drives.

That said, my boat will be pulled sometime in March to change the break-in oil in the new drives (20 hrs.), and to inspect everything......inside the bellows, and otherwise. I'll plan on reporting the findings afterwards.

I am scheduled to have mine replaced with the latest and hopefully this will be the end of my nightmare

Here's an update...
I have the NEW design on my boat. These have been on my boat since June 2008 and now I have 128 hours on them since the bellows/shafts/gimbals/etc were replaced. I'm not very happy.

Did I mention that his is a FRESH water boat?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It may be time for the class action suit. Now I have to have mine pulled again.

The day I was putting it on the trailer, I'm going about 2mph and I could hear that "growling" when I turned hard to starboard. Sure as sh*t, I verified today that the starboard gimbal bearing is TOAST (again)!

June 2008 - I got new gimbals, shafts, bellows, etc.

How many hours do you have on the "new new" bellows? Only 128 hours? And this is a boat that's out of the water at least 5 - 6 months of the year?

Just to clarify, you had the Version 3 bellows on the boat? If it was done in June of 2008 in may be the Version 2s. When I purchased my boat in Feb of this year, they installed the new V3s and I'm pretty sure they mentioned that they just recently upgraded/changed them .....

Chris, good point. I know I had my bellows change scheduled for March / April 2009 and my marina had just heard about the "new new" bellows -- and had to wait for the parts.

Mine were changed last October/November and they were supposed to be the latest and greatest.

I hope I have version 3 on my boat...I had a guy from Volvo look at them in April and said that I had the current bellows AND they were installed correctly.

Very likely he ended up with the version 2 bellows installed at that time, which were ultimataly found to be worse than the originals. Version 3 is the fix.

Man, I hope so. I love the boat and the drives except for the bellows problem.

Now I have to sit back and watch the marina and Volvo duke it out over who's problem it is...cuz I know it's not mine!

Stay tuned....

The service bulletin is dated Dec 2008; I remember my salesman trying to tell me in Feb of this year that my new boat had the latest bellows, I didn't trust him, so I called Volvo and gave them the serial #s and sure enough, they were not the latest V3 bellows. They reluctantly changed them before shipping the boat to me...... Hopefully they got it right this time !

Mine were installed in November last year and were the latest attempt.

UPDATE - Looks like I have the bellows kit 3886847 from SB 44-1-59 (which is NOT the lastest and greatest). I should have bellows kit 21277185 from SB 44-1-73. Now I sit and wait to see what the marina and Volvo come up with. Stay tuned...
