We're Going To Need A Bigger Boat

I didn't know Juan (is that his name?) was following this too

BREAKING: Suez Canal service firm says massive container ship that was stuck in vital waterway has been set free, on the move.

so this ship only has 1 prop. Is that true for most container ships? Too long for 2 props to make a difference?

Yes almost all and the reason is economics. Also most these are made to easily lengthen with a plug. A guy I flew for in San Jose owned container ships on the North Atlantic. He also owned the Pruneyard of which I am sure you are familiar. It is a fascinating business. Makes airline economics seem rich.

Relying on "old memory", I believe that many large cargo vessels not only have only one prop, they have no transmission ( and maybe not even a clutch ). The prop is directly connected, without a gearbox. To reverse, you stop the engine then run the engine in reerse ( This MAY be ancient tech. No sure if current ).

But is is all about the money.

Perhaps I chose the wrong career? Five runs right through without a hiccup... ;)
