We are interested in replacing the carpet in our boat with wood or laminate flooring. Am interested in hearing from anyone that may have done this, how you finished the hatches? Edges against the walls? Pictures?
 
I ripped out my carpeting and installed Allure flooring, sold by Home Depot. It looks great, is waterproof, and easy to maintain. I am glad that I did it.

They also sell the Teak & Holly flooring. Easy to do it yourself. Looks outstanding. Easy to keep clean. No more carpet anymore:)

World panel products. I have often wondered about doing this. For those of you that have, is the noise level considerably higher in the cabin? I always assumed that the carpet would dampen the noise.
 
No change in noise. We did put down two throw rugs.
 
I recently pulled up the carpet and installed "engineered" wood flooring in my galley area. For the floor hatches I found an aluminum T moulding that I spray painted to a complimenting color. I have curved walls in this area of the cabin so I used vinyl cove-base material for that.
 
I did it on our 40 aft cabin. Worked out well. I do suspect it added weight. How much I don't know.
 
We put down a pad. This levels out any bumps or dips also helps in noise reduction from engine room. Glue pad down, then glued teak & holly vinyl over the top.

Did the same last year but Termites ate out big area of sub floor. Didnt know they were there till I felt soft spot under the Allure. Just had the boat tented by Orkin.
 
My floor has wood around hatches.

Dont know how they got there but they did a lot of damage before I realized they were there.If you have any wood on your boat(not Teak),Tap on any areas that are covered with vynal or fabric especially plywood, with back of screwdriver or hammer, listen for soft or hollow spots. You will not know the critters are eating your boat untill you look for them.
 
Tip. I am about to undertake a similar project on my 87 381 CC Catalina. So many choices. My flooring material is still under discussion. Please share with me and I with you our progress. I have a friend with a 42 Marinet who has used engineered wood. It looks wonderful,but was a boat load of work. I am still in the Allure camp given that I want to create seven hatches. Yes seven. That will give me access to all major bilge items. More to follow as I progress. My wife was at the carpet as I signed to buy. Spent the summer with foam shop floor fatigue squares. Bill.
