Hell, w/us in FL? I thought it bad when we lost our beach up to the sidewalks/boardwalks from Sandy-a drop in the bucket even though the local committee said we lost $12mil in sand...
 
A friend told me Kismet is not damaged. They got flooded, but dock will be same for next season..
 
Not in pics I saw. Dock supports are there but planks are gone.

My neighbor wanted to go out for a ride today on his boat so I went along with him. We went out our canal in Lindenhurst, headed west to Amityville cut, ran the state channel to Captree and then went east to Ocean Bay Park/Flynns. Came through West Channel and took a quick look at the Bay Shore marina before heading west.

It was actually encouraging to see there wasn't as much damage as we expected. The only building we saw totally demolished across the bay was one of the small places across from Captree. The worst damage we saw the whole ride was between my canal and the Anchorage, one house was totally off its foundation and turned sideways. On Fire Island though nothing looked that bad, no houses totally detroyed along the bay. I'm sure there's a lot of damage we didn't see cruising past, and there's probably worse damage on the ocean side, but with the wind NE for much of the storm I wasn't sure what to expect on the bay side of Fire Island. Kismet looked fine, there were actually a few boats there, I assume working on repairs. The docks at Ocean Beach and Seaview looked good from the outside, as did Atlantique. Cedar had a big section of boardwalk up, the park service dock by the lighthouse was wrecked, as was the Captree fishing pier, but the main inside dock at Captree looked okay and the party boat fleet was there. We heard Frank and Dicks was pretty much gone, but while it was damaged the structures looked intact and there were already people working there, as we also saw in Seaview, Ocean Bay park, and Kismet at least. There were trucks driving by on the Ocean Parkway and from what we could see the dunes were still there. I had been hearing most of the trees on Fire Island were most likely wiped out, but that wasn't the case at all, plenty of trees and vegetation standing. The new village dock at Lindenhurst looked fine as did the Bay Shore marina outside dock.

Again, I'm sure there was plenty of damage we couldn't see from a distance, and houses that look okay have a lot of flood damage (just like mine). But cruising around today things looked remarkably normal across the bay, the barrier islands weren't flattened, and there was hardly any debris floating around. Compared to what I feared we'd see that was a good sign at least.

Some good news, more welcome now than ever.
 
That is some good news and perhaps South Shore boating will be good next year.
I am still kicking around my plans here but more news like that could sway my decision! :)

Marinas etc will probably get back in operation by spring. remember that is their only source of income and they do remove docks and pilings in winter anyway. Of course this is a big deal and not everything will be back but I would be surprised if businesses don’t do everything they can to get open.

Many of the beach joints I remember ( Flynn’s??) needed a good wash out any way. :D

I disagree. My marina is destroyed. We are a dockominium, so it's not a business. Granted there are other marina choices and I plan to look. My plan is to take a year or 2 off from big boat boating. Looking at a Searay 240/260 Sundeck on a trailer to satisfy my boat itch. Let all these places rebuild, then look to buy another 40+ cruiser. That decision hurts alot and I keep going back and forth, but as of know that is what I feel.

Be careful running in shallow bays and lakes. Storms push in surge, but pull out debris when the water recedes.
Lots of inland fishing boats were damaged after Hurricane Rita in SW La. due to submerged debris in the lake.

Nothing wrong with a sundeck type boat. They are probably better suited for the south bay than a 40 cruiser. A lot of smaller islands will be easily accessible and a tent etc can make for a great weekend getaway on your own island.
Just be a little cautious about jumping into anything. It will be different boating style and if you want to do something else in a few years trading boats is an expensive PITA.

Uh oh! just realized that you will be on the hook for dock repairs. :(
 
Dave, I know you are still hurting a bunch over losing your beautiful Regal. I do ot know you well, but from what I have seen, I think you will be getting another big boat sooner than later. Whatever you do, we are all glad you still have the energy, will and love for boating, even after a terrible event like you are experiencing, to contribute to BoaterEd. Best of luck Dave.

P.S. Anyone want to bet that Dave buys another big boat before this coming season? I thnk his tide is turning.......
 
Thanks, but still not sure about another big boat. I really do want one and I am eyeing the Searay 420 Sedan Bridge, but just not sure. One issue is it won't fit in my slip. So until I can make other arrangemnts, that is a issue. I am looking at slips on the North Shore and may do that temporarily.

The Sundeck or bowrider was actually on my short list before Sandy. We find we want another toy and wanted something we can buzz around in without moving the big boat. I know, do we really need another boat. Either way, it was being looked at and researched prior to the storm. Now it may be a stop gap until I can get back on the big boy horse!

I don't think Dave's wife will spend a night on a boat that doesn't have satellite tv! ;)

The Great South Bay is a very different place with a small boat and an outboard or outdrive that can tilt up then it is with a big inboard boat. Lots of places to explore that the big boat can't get to. However if you're used to the big boat might be hard to adjust to something smaller for overnights.

I'm sure there is a lot of damage out there, the Town of Islip has stated that the majority of the houses on Fire Island within the town have structural damage. The thing that struck me from the ride we took was from the water there was not a lot of visible damage. I was expecting to see houses on the barrier islands demolished, roofs off, etc, and thankfully we didn't see that. I've been reading stuff online saying every house and tree on Fire Island was leveled and that isn't the case, and most of the docks in the Ocean Beach area looked okay. Even the old big sign for the bridge is still standing somehow... The guys I went with heard Frank and Dicks was gone, Flynns was gone, someone even told them the Jones Beach water tower had collapsed. Again, all were still there and standing. They heard the Bay Shore marina was a wreck and everything looked fine there. Running through the state channel you wouldn't know anything happened. The marshes are the same, islands look the same, the houses are there... Obviously repairs will need to be made to docks and structures but I'm hopeful that things won't be all that different next year, and there were already boats and cranes and work crews on Fire Island working on things.

Dave, if you do get the itch for a big boat and questioning the local spots, from what I heard out east did not get hit as hard. Montauk only had a couple boats knocked off the stands and charter boats were back in the water and fishing this past weekend. Montauk Marine basin is up and running selling fuel to cars now to help people out. Friends with houses in the Sag Harbor area did not get hit as hard as expected. Might be the year to try out there.

I had a bowrider before. Overnights will be out of the question unless I crash on Walters boat. Would be nice to explore a little.
It's more than fire island. Anchorage ain't gonna be back to normal so quick. Also I want to try north shore again. Will trailer it around.
And longer I wait the more my dream boat comes down in price. Plus I will still be looking for deals.
 
John, did you happen to pass Oak Island? We have friends who have a house there and wondering how the houses on the island made out. Do you know anything about the bay houses near Merrick, Bellmore?
