ANACORTES, Wash. - A multimillion-dollar yacht capsized overnight near Anacortes, dumping six people in the water. All were rescued by Good Samaritans and local police and fire crews.

Witnesses said the 90-foot yacht flipped as it was being launched at about 9 p.m. Sunday.

It was a chaotic scene as rescuers rushed in to pull the six people aboard out of the water. There were eyewitness reports that crews had to use axes to reach people near the engine compartment.

Two of the rescued people were taken to the hospital to be checked out, said Petty Officer Jordan Akiyama of the U.S. Coast Guard.

One of the crew members, Wade Benda, said he still doesn't know what went wrong, but he's glad he got out alive.

"To see it all in the water like that it's kind of tough," he said.

Benda, the yacht's mechanic, is part of the team that spent two and a half years building the multi-million dollar vessel.

Poorly written story with not enough information to even try and figure out what happened.

Can you imagine waiting three years to have your dream boat built, having it completed and then having it destroyed at launch? Not to mention the builders who not only invested their reputation in the build but are also now on the hook for the loss.

I'm not getting the cause of this roll over? Was it due to shallow water on one side of the vessel?? I think the engineer and ship builder have some splaining to do?
Bill

Apparently one side was shallow with rocks. The stabilizer was lowered onto the rock and the boat rolled.

Apparently whomever launched it has rocks for brains!
So let me get this straight a stabilizer that is made to keep a boat from rolling rolled it?
I'm not sure if this doesn't get anymore bizarroworld than it appears to have been.
If it wasn't such an expensive roll this could actually be a SNL skit!
Bill

Heretofore, no one knew rocks existed in the launch area of the ship yard. No one ever heard of it before. Yeah.

No one else has ever seen a boat sitting up high and dry on the keel and stabilizers? Something is vewy vewy squoowey hehyah.

I wonder how it was being launched.. Is the crane in the pics there to launch or to now try to right it ?

Perhaps the launch party had too much to drink instead of hitting the bow with the bottle?
Bill

It appears from the above story that title had passed to the new owner. Hope he had a binder on it.

Latest is that the boat was righted with a crane and pumped dry. Some tests will done before it is lifted out with th crane and placed on the hard.
The builder has reportedly announced to its staff that they are closing down.

These incidents do happen from time to time... Recently, or may be last year, a Maine builder launched a 80 or so sailboat which didn't sink or flip but was sitting below waterline before engine, Genset and rig were installed.. Clearly someone screwed up their displacement calculations or didn't pay attention to weight during th build,

I have to say that when I launched my lil 26 footer earlier this year, I kept my fingers crossed hopping I hadn't messed up either the displacement calculations or material weight!

Intact stability issues complicated by an anticipated need for additional permanent ballast, which was reportedly to be added following launching. New design with extended second deck cabin. Another web site has a copy of the stability calculations which tells the story. You can bet there is some serious finger pointing going on.

The builder is closing down? Hmm. Getting ready to "Get out of Dodge"?
