Carver 44 Sojourn PICS

I love Carver but not this. The design is chopped up and nose heavy. Radar arch is to far forward. The sun pad behind the helm looks out of place and an after thought. At least it is being made with the Volvo IPS's.

The 43 Supersport is what I consider to be a better designed boat.

The resaon the they called it a Sojourn, so you can pay more money. It sounds expensive.

This is the definition for Sojourn. "A temporary Stay" or "to stay as a temporary resident".

I must admit that I have never liked the general aesthetic of the Mariner series. Someone likened it to a whale, and that description resonates with me.

However, the single level layout is way better for people that have mobility issues than my Aft Cabin's layout (which has steps or ladders EVERYWHERE). My immediate family is fine with the aft cabin layout, but my parents would sure LOVE the layout of the new Sojourn.

So, I say hang a handicap placard from the rear view mirror and call it a success. :^}

we have a 350 mariner and love the single layout. I like everything about this new boat except the forward arch/hardtop look. Everyone who has been aboard our carver loves the space, the layout and bridge capacity. I just wish this new version was more affordable. 500k is crazy, high for this boat.

following this series of posts is alot like watching tennis...

I for one appreciate seeing all the new stuff coming out, whether I like it or not. Kudos to Ram. I secretly always enjoyed the shape of an 80's Viking AC (despite being a Carver AC owner and enjoying the lower price point that dicatates "clear title" for me). Someday....

Hey Don...come to the CP boat show...we have a Viking 50 Motor Yacht there...gorgeous...and ...slow :-)

I have always been a fan of the old Mariner... one of my favorite boats (except for the sink in front of the portside flybridge passenger!)... but this Sojourn has more lines than a college ruled notebook. It's hideous. When I first saw the photos, I thought to myself, ha, looks like a Chris Bangle design. Then I read through the posts... Do I understand correctly that this is a BMW design?

I hate to sound more ignorant than I already am, but what is the glass plates for that are inset into the
grab rails right after going up the stairs to the flybridge?

I am not a fan of the Mariner look, but I do like the inside room. There is a lot of room in
the 32 footer.

SLOW could mean better economy. I don't imagine a 50' Viking satisfies my "ownership" requirements but they are certainly fun to ogle and dream about. When is the show this year?

Hi Kenny,
How's it going??? Great to see someone else get beatin up once in awhile. Anyway, the boat looks great except maybe that window???Can you get it turned around so the fat part in forward???
Is that you and the Admiral on the bridge???I hope you don't slam on the bidders and she goes forward like a I.C.B.M.
And one other quick question....my wife would like to know what kind of hair spray she uses as her hair is not getting messed up going 40mph.
Great to see the pics and keep up the great work.

"We'll see what they call the new 33 when it hits the market...it's a Mariner style boat as well."

Cool - a new Carver that even I might be able to afford one of these days!!!

Interested to see how and where the canvas and isinglass will attach to the hardtop and to sunpad/aft seat/fridge area. and how that will change the look of it. Should be quiet a lot of canvas and most people will leave it up and just roll it.

Where the hell have you been?

Tsk, tsk, tsk, Pascal, the king of practicality and usefullness doesn't like the "look" of the boat. I have the Silverton 330 which was modeled after the Carver 350. I'm the first to admit, I'm not crazy about the looks from the outside, it looks like a high-top sneaker.

However, here are some important safety and pracial designs:
- 12'- 4" beam in a 33' model
- It meets the 35' LOA limit at my club
- Sidewalk design gives full beam interior
* Large salon with Settee AND dining room
* Seperate galley area
* Large refrigerator
* Seperate standup shower stall
- Access to bridge is via STAIRS not ladder
- Access to bow is safe with large walkway and tall railings
- Pulpit is large and safe
- My dinghy fits on the bow
- Bridge comfortably holds 10 people
- Cockpit is spacious and all utilities are easy to reach.
- I can/do climb over my bow rail and jump to the dock...I can also step on the rubrail and pull myself up
- Engine room on a 33'er: http://www.crotonyachtclub.com/cwalsh/HPIM2676.JPG

In the end, I sacrafice looks for practicality, usability and safety.

Safety over vanity, I'm OK with that!!

I keep looking at theses pictures, and at first, I smiled when Pascal made the "Butt F ugly" comment. kind of agreed (that is why I own the boat I have, traditional lines). I remember when MikeeH bought his 35 Silverton, I too felt as Pascal "Butt f Ugly", I just did not have the heart to tell him what I thought. I think we emailed or talked on another site and it was clear to me the advantage for him to own this boat as opposed to a 34c, it had to do with his wife.

Chris,
Felt the same about your boat, but when we talked, it was obvious why you went you route.

This Carver will be at the boat show (Tobay) in late October, must say I am looking forward to seeing it, the look is growing on me. I bet the interior is outstanding. If it is 500k, well I will never own it:)

Walter

Yep, I considered alot of boats, including a few of the Carver 350's. While I liked the interior layout of the carver a little better, I chose the Silverton due to it's smaller documented LOA of 35'4".

Show me another 35' LOA boat with the room I have. I couldn't find one. In fact, I really wanted to buy from the local Cruisers/Regal dealer as they are awesome. However, they couldn't match the amenities and room in this boat with the "sidewalk design".

Truth be told, if I didn't have LOA issues, Robyn's Nest was giving away his late 90's 41' Silverton at the time I purchased...I loved that boat!

I saw this boat yesterday at the Norwalk Boat Show, the boat show price was $579,000 or there abouts. I was very disappointed, IMHO, much better boats all around (non IPS) for less than this boat.

Walter

I would not buy a boat that is available with IPOS without it. Could you name some of these (much better) boats? I'd liike to know what you think may be better and why.

Kenny,
This is just one man's opinion, go to a boat shows and look at the competition in that price range. I just felt for that price, the salon should have been bigger and warmer. I got past the fugly of the boat, but my impression of the entire package was a big thumb down.
