For anyone who's built their own boat....

All that weight....on a 1/4" hull? That makes me a bit squeamish.

Reminds me of the Troop ship, USS Gen.W.A. Mann.
On the way to Korea we were in a Typhoon for three days. No SICKER Cargo did you ever see or read about.
There was a Seam near my bunk. At the port side curve just above the water line.
When we'd dive into a good wave, the ship would come to a shuddering stop..nearly, the screws came out of the water, the whole ship shook and thundered, and a fine spray of Water would shoot out from a crack in the hull, along that seam, at four of us Bunking along that Seam.

A man, any man in fact, has only enough emotion in his brain to be that terrified no more than a few times in his life.
When he get's to that last terrifying moment, the useful life of his brain has ended. One should be ready for that long cool rest!

The hull, bottom, keel & sides are 1/2". The cabin sides are 1/4".

The keel has 5 layers of glass, 2 x 17 oz + 2 x 12 oz + 1 x 10 oz. The bottom as 2 layers, 1 x 33 oz + 1 x 12 oz. The sides have 3 layers, 1 x 18 oz + 1 x 12 oz + 1 x 10 oz. The inside of the hull will get the same layup.

Don't worry Thud, we won't be popping any rivets in heavy seas! :-)

One man's journey to refit a '69 Roamer. Really good read.

A while ago someone posted about another DIY boat that was loaded with wood work and such. I have not been able to locate it. It was a trawler with twins and rather ornate rail supports.

Just out to check on the boat shed. *Note: Some of you southerners might want to look away now!* :-)

Shed appears to be holding up pretty well with all the repairs we had to do this year. Noticed there's more snow clinging to the top than previous years.

Belated wishes for a great year to you and your family Bob. Thanks for looking in.

I was stumbling around Google Earth today and noticed they updated the pic for our area. You can now see the Big Blue Boat Building Shed from Space! :-)

Mother Nature dropped another foot of snow on us night before last. Lori snapped this pic out the screen door! *sigh*

It's gonna take a couple of months for that mess to melt! :-( Gettin' real anxious to get in the shed and back to work on the boat.

Rick she's going to be a real beauty. People keep telling me I need a large boat to cruise in.
I think your design is a 29'? It sure looks like I'd be comfortable cruising in something similar!

It'll be 31' 5" length on deck Bill. Just 10' beam though. I think it'll give the two of us just 'nuff room for all the essentials. I had to nix the washer/dryer though. Admiral wasn't that happy but.......... ;-)

Was watching some 'Mythbusters' clips on Youtube and got to thinking if there was a boating myth they could test. I remember back in my Coast Guard days the hairy ass'd ole' sailors and their sayings. One in particular was: "On a sinking ship there's no better bilge pump than a frightened sailor with a bucket!" So I submitted that to Mythbusters! More on that on my blog:

Finally a little warmer weather melted enough snow to let me in the shed. Web log updated: del/2014/04/some-warmer-weather-finally.html

C'mon heatwave~!

OMG Rick. Did someone break into your shed over the winter and make a mess?. Or did the cat do it?..

You need to pack it all and move south...

Only 4 months of boat building weather a year SUCKS!!

I kinda figured Wayne moved in and lived there all winter without telling me then left the mess for me to clean up!

Not yet Thud. It's slow going.

I hear ya Pascal. We'll be there in a few years.

Standby.

Well, no thanks to Wayne, the snow is almost all gone now. Still a lot of water in the ground and the floor of the boat shed is a mud bog but it's getting better. I was in there this morning puttering around and tidying up a bit. Found some things and lost others. Web log updated: del/2014/04/found-some-things-lost-some-things.html

Hey Wayne! Did you leave the friggin' door open again?

+26 C yesterday & sunshine
0 C here today & snowing

I gotta get this boat finished and get out of this gawd forsaken country!

Rick I admire your tenacity taking on a huge project like this. I love the looks of the sister ship. I'm sure your's will be as good if not better. I'm embarking on a new boating project refitting and upgrading a almost 40 year old trawler. At least it's fiberglass it's actually in really good shape and condition for it's age. I shouldn't have to re-power this one but it will be a major project to get her upgraded to my standards. I'm going backwards I'm losing 4 feet of boat actually a bit more. The Mainship 40SB will be on the market as soon as I close on the Gulfstar 36.
