Also while the administration is shutting down coal powered electricity generation, risking grid stability, the Germans are building 23 new coal powered plants and the Chinese start up a new plant every week.

John, doesn't sound like you've ever been to Pittsburgh if you compare it to Detroit! Pittsburgh has jobs, just no longer dependent on the steel industry. Pittsburgh diversified many years ago, unlike Detroit. Health care and high tech industries have flourished there. Ever see the Pittsburgh skyline as you exit the Fort Pitt tunnels? I can't name all the new skyscrapers and I grew up there.
 
I do not believe in global warming. I believe in statistics. The one thing that gets me during all of this debating is the complete disregard for statistics. We have "above average temperatures" now we are below. Guess what makes an average?? highs and lows. Come on people, we had a warmer year, now we are in a strong cold spell. Hopefully our summer will be warm. You know, this is going to be the longest period(in central Jersey) in at least a decade that we have snow cover on the ground. What does that say? To me, it is trending towards a colder period.

Marcel, I am a denier, I believe in evolution, and the earth is way older than 6000 yrs. And about the fact that the earth is several billion years old, our averages are a blink of an eye in relation to the age of the earth! Our 10 year warm spell is not an indication of global warming. Its helping make our averages that we have. Now that it will be below average, what will the saying be? The polar vortex is a creation of global warming? Idiots. We just happened to name something that has always been occurring. One thing I do agree with... whatever is happening will happen. Lets make the air cleaner for our children to breath, but lets not pretend we changed the evolution of the earth in 100 years of fossil fuel usage. Any boater who believes in global warming should never use their boat, very inefficient!

Note that this news comes from a UK newspaper as the facts are ignored by the US MSM.
Of course it's probably mostly weather but remember when the warming believers predicted that many of the ski slopes would be closed by now, or remember when Al Gore shut off the air conditioning in the congressional hearing room in August, opened all the windows while James Hanson warned our elected officials of catastrophic global warming, then it was Gore induced climate not weather.

Greg - Obviously my comments do not make a lot of sense without Gonzo's comments to which I was responding. But the jist of what he said was w/o steel in Detroit and Pittsburgh the area has improved from a global warming perspective. My point was at what cost.

I have been to Pittsburgh many times but I have not gone there to study their economy. Skyscrapers do not make for a robust economy. However, I have done some reading up on it today and yes it does appear that they have had a significant improvement since 2005. I am not saying their economy is great but they have certainly learned to diversify and move away from the manufacturing sector. Most of this diversity has been in the form of healthcare and government contracts which now both account for 12% each of the local economy wages. Manufacturing is still 10% of the wages. I guess that is good for Pittsburgh.
 
Spent most of my life in Pittsburgh. Have always been mystified by those expecting to see black snow in Pittsburgh from "all the pollution". Pittsburgh got it's economy together long before 2005. You don't build world class medical centers in dying cities. Corporations don't build skyscrapers in dying cities either. And since this is a boating forum, there are more pleasure boats registered in the Pittsburgh area than any other inland port city in the country. Gonzo's comments are nowhere to be found.

And when I searched for the best hospitals in the US I could not find a single specialty where Pittsburgh is in the top 5.

Sorry Greg. You were correct in that it is not on the same level as Detroit but you should have left it there. I understand home town loyalty. But to pint the picypture you are trying to paint is pretty wide brush.

No... I deleted the before you posted (or probably while you were... there were no follow-up posts at the time). I just decided it wasn't worth it. Nobody is changing anyone's mind here... This is a boating forum and I intend to only talk about boating moving forward. I wish more people would too.

Look at the miracle that's called Children's hospital of Pittsburgh. I'd call that world class medicine. You accuse me of painting with a broad brush. Would that be as broad as the brush you used? Pittsburgh truly is the "City of Champions". Let me know when Baltimore gets there. Stick to what you know- it obviously isn't Pittsburgh.
 
Your right Greg. Pittsburgh is a burgeoning city of economic prosperity and a model for others to follow.

Are we still talking about green house effects and the cost of green initiatives or are you looking for a pissing match of your home town is better than any one else's?

I did not say the conditions where poor Greg. I was commenting on what the being green movement did to the city. Again, it is tough to tell that is what I meant since the person I was responding to deleted his comments. I even admitted that after reading the city of Pittsburgh somewhat biased PR page they have had a revitalization since 2005 despite (or inspite if you prefer) what the global climate change community has done to the rust belt. That is their claim, not mine. Nor is it my imagination.
 
No, what you said was "does anyone remember when Pittsburgh and Detroit had jobs and an actual economy"? You clearly implied that there were no jobs organ economy in Pittsburgh. That simply is not true. Right now, Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Western Ohio are sitting on top of huge shale oil and gas reserves. And they are going after it. Lots of people there have benefited from that, both money and jobs. Despite the climate change community. No jobs and no economy would be poor conditions, wouldn't they? A rather wide brush here,don't you think?
