Jones Beach Air Show

No thunderbirds or blue angels this year that sucks i picked a vacation around this. The show is not that good without them.

I would refer to RobSki's post, Zachs is not where you want to be!!!

There is a little cove type area on the east side of the Jones Beach fishing pier. I watched the airshow from there in 2008 on a friend's boat. It isn't really protected at all. It can get a little choppy because of the boat traffic in the channel just outside of it, and there is no 5 MPH zone there. Then again, I was on a smaller boat that day. It also got pretty crazy there. I remember a drunk guy coming in and having a problem getting his anchor to catch. He drifted in to the same boat two or three times before his wife (also drunk) shamed him in to leaving.
After having done both, I don't think it's any better there than at Zach's Bay. The only benefit I can see to it is that your departure will be much quicker from there when the show is over. If that doesn't matter to you, and you really want to do it, then I would bite the bullet and go to Zach's.
If the weather is nice, I might just go for the practice show on Friday when I can have Zach's Bay practically all to myself.

We did Zach's Bay last year for the Blue Angels. It was a great day, there were a lot of boats but we rafted with a few others and all our anchors held, I didn't personally see any boats drag and bump. There were a few on the beach though, as the tide went out.

A few issues I had were

1) Jones inlet was pretty shallow, I did time it at near low tide (my luck), with some crazy breakers. I hear it has shoaled up pretty good. Anybody know the condition of the inlet now?

2) I broke an antenna on the sloop channel bridge, I radioed for an opening, but the operator told me I had plenty of room. I should have known but...

I would definatly do it again if the inlet is ok. I'd be game for a raft-up.

I've never had a problem going in or out of Jones Inlet. I fish there quite a bit during the season. The last time I was there was late October, and I don't recall any problems.
Then again, I have a much smaller boat. But there are lots of party boats that go in and out of there all the time. If you happen to get there at or near low tide again and you are a little unsure, just hang around for a little while and follow one of them in.

We go to Zacks all the time and have significant raft ups (10-20 30-45' boats) with the power squadron and the trick is having out enough anchors (usually every other boat) and keeping an eye on the wind.

You just need to watch the tides:

They don't call me "the anchor nazi" for nothing...

Hoping for the Angels or Thunderbirds, and good weather so we can make the jaunt!

Here's a few shots from last year's Air Show

Hopefully the Thunderbirds will be there this year.

I need Dave to do one of his chart postings of west of the new drawbridge.

If I recall you posted this shot after the show I was impressed then as I am now. I was there I couldn't get a clear shot no matter how hard I tried. I don't know how you did that they fly by so fast.

Hogan & Dave,

We do Memorial Day at Zachs every year. The thunder of the jets swooping down over us cannot be beat.

Count me in for a raft up. I usually get there crack of dawn on Saturday. I have a 35lb Delta Fastset, 100' of chain, and dive tanks in case there are any foul ups.

Should be a blast.

I have great photos from last year.

I have hundreds of pictures I also was bare boned grounded there one year missed judged the tide not too big of a deal as long as you have food and drink. More embarassing than anything.

That is a cool picture... But where are the clouds... I guess he/she should have left the bong at the base.... :-)

Great Pictures....

Thanks for sharing...

Well when you organize your raft up you can assign everyone a call sign and a wing man.
