Kohler Generator 9EOZD Won't Start

Pascal:
Indeed that is true. I wonder how much longer diesel pump shops will be around. Soon they weill be replaced by Geek Squad contol box rebuilders.

Yes it makes diagnostics easier but add a layer of complexity and possible failurs.

Reduced water flow due to weeds or other stuff, or impeller issues, almost always gives you warning signs with a louder exhaust. I always look and listen at the exhaust after starting a Genset and as it runds I often take a look and listen,

Easier said than done on my boat. When i start it, yeah, I can listen and hear and know right away if it is running good but once I am up on the bridge with the 2 diesels running, I have no clue what the genny is up to. My only hint is when the wife comes up and says the AC or TV went out.

I sort of wish they had a remote guage panel for the genny on the bridge.
Something show voltage output, RPMs and temp would be awesome!
Never seen that on any boat. I have seen where some boats have a light that shows generator is running.
Nice, but not extremely useful.

interesting point. If you have any 120V outlet at the bridge you could use a night light as an indicator.

The SmartCraft display on my Searay shows that. Maybe it could be added as an aftermarket item to your boat....

What would you do on your trip from Jersey had you known the genny shut down? I doubt I would stop in the NY harbor approaches to fuss with it.

Maybe it is just me but I don't care if anything stops other than the main engines and even then I'll run on one until I get someplace to drop the hook. OTOH bilge pumps coming on get my attention.

Well, when something fails or stops I want to make sure there isn't some catastrophic event associated with it like an electrical Fire, a busted hose, etc

And easy way to monitor the genset from the bridge is to install a blue seas meter up on at the helm. You don't even have to run wires from the ER and can just tap into an existing outlet. The blue seas can be programmed to beep if voltage or freq get out of spec

Obviosly underway you can't monitor the exhaust but you s be surprised how many time I have pointed out loud, low flow, steamy genset exhaust to people only to get a blank so what stare sometimes followed by the genset shutting down

true but like Dave I probably would not hear it either though I can and do walk around and check all three exhausts and peek in the ER form time to time.

Dave I know you have a full tank now but if the fuel was low when the genny shut down it will quit before the mains.

Is there a way to run the electric pump to fill the fuel system without cranking?

Bruce, I believe the 9EOZ is the same as our 8EOZ with a slightly bigger head on it. there is an electric lift pump on it and we have had problems with ours over the years. look at the side of the injector pump. there is a bleeder screw on the side where the fuel line attaches from the on engine filter. crack the bleeder screw and crank briefly to verify you have fuel flow to the injector pump.

if there is no flow you can either have a power loss to the lift pump or you have lost prime or fuel flow somehow.

if you have fuel flow, you should be able to start briefly and then stall if you have a sensor fault. open the top of the control panel and look for loose connections, anyone of which can come loose and cause all kinds of trouble on the control head.

we just went thru a lot of trouble finding out why our genset would run then shut down after a filter change. the seat on the filter had developed a bit of corrosion. just enough to let the lift pump pull air and loose prime when the fuel tanks were less than 1/3 full. took some head scratching to figure it out. we have also had the control board fail more than once. there is a service in Chicago that will bench test and repair your control board if you want to keep a spare on board.

hope this helps.

Does t keep getting a uu code. That is code on display when I went down to see why it shutdown.
Now it just cranks and won't turn over
No code. And no noise other than it cranking.

Isn't cranking same as turning over ??

So tried a few things and hear the pump going. So I think it is the solenoid.
I threw in the towel as a lot of people told me I can mess it up worse if I keep cranking and don't know what I am doing.
Mechanic coming down.
Trying someone new as the other guy I used for generator work everyone seems to have issues with.
Will update when fix is confirmed.
Thanks for all the advice.
Good stuff.

As usual around here the Generator mechanics are tough to get a hold of.
He says he is coming today.
We will see.

Today has come and gone in fact it's almost tomorrow making this yesterdays news any updates?

So I finally told other mechanic to take a hike and called a different one.
I haven't seen the full bill or diagnosis but I called the girl in the office and she said it was a clogged fuel line
She didn't know if it was in the generator or before. She said it says Algae in fuel and no fuel flow from clog.

Guess I need to get more details but it sounds like it took them a few hours to get it flowing based on the amount she told me was on the bill.
All labor.

So if it was Algae, should I be adding something regularly to my fuel to prevent this? I used my boat more this year than any year. So it's not from no use.

First talk direct to the mechanic to see what he actually said. If your filter are generally clean I don't understand the algae story. Everyone seems to buy the algae story but I think it so much BS unless you have a lot of water. If you run with low fuel and bounce around any junk will get stirred up and filtered out. Always filling the tanks is not the best idea IMO.

Do you have water in your fuel? IMO more crap comes with the fuel than develops in your tank. That first fill up in spring will probably be fuel sitting in the tank all winter. Buy fuel from the guy who sells the most or better yet a truck with filters.

Well what's interesting is this started after a very nasty ocean run with a following sea which could of pushed water in thru back of boat where exhaust is but I would think that wouldn't cause it. Perhaps thru vents. Motors are fine so far, and I have run a few times since this started with Genny and no issues there.

I will see what else I can find out, but I did read about fuel on this site:

http://www.mydieseldoctor.com/FAQ.html

Basically it points out that the more you use your boat, the more Algae you can get due to heated fuel returning to the tank.

Now, i did have 3 clogs from weed this year where my Genny ran hot, it didn't shut down because it was getting flow, just not enough to fill muffler and I can tell something is wrong because it got loud. Clean out clog in strainer and it ran fine after that. So I wonder if when it runs hotter, it is forcing even hotter fuel into that tank and in turn building up algae.

don't worry about it and I doubt that you got any growth from water recently ingested. It takes time for stuff to grow. If it even does.

Do you have clear bowls on water separators so you can see what's going on? IIRC your boat came from a lake where diesel fuel sales were probably low. You probably just stirred up some bottom junk that had been there for some time.
