Missing BoaterEd

Commercial sites pop up on more than this site. There called cookies. There common on all sites.

Exactly. For example, I was googling pulleys to update our davit. I still get them in adds on FB, Here, there and Every freaking where, even though I bought them weeks ago!

I need something else to google, I wonder if I google getting into a hotel will cause Paris Hilton photos to show up?

And why on earth would you want to see photos of that skank? :D

Re ads, I have the Ghostery add-on to my browser and it blocks the ads. For example, it blocked 4 trackers/ads on this topic's page.

I used to be a member of a number of independent forums like this, but they are all either dying or dead because of social media sites, particularly Facebook. The reason is; why go to multiple sites to discuss your various interests, when you can go to one that has far greater functionality? This has nothing to do with how BoaterEd is run, but simply a sign of the times. Someone like Les is going to have slightly fewer resources than Mark Zuckerberg has.

Exactly. And I have reiterated that in past dialog of this sort that rolls around from time to time.

I think B.E. has some "brand loyalty" that transcends the ADHD aspects of FB and other sites loaded with adds.

There are a number of other boating sites which are very active and growing. You can get very good information there as well as a varied opinion on various other topics not directly about boating. Similar to the past posts on the subject of BE being less desirable some of these sites are pointed out within this post near the beginning.
I do have an anchor but that does not make my opinion any more or less valuable than another post but the ideas and thoughts on each of these posts already contain the reasons why this site is what it is.
Posting your viewpoint does not make a difference so there is typically no reason to restate the same information repeatedly.
Having an additional thread in the BE members only area is another ingredient.

Hope this helps

IMHO.... NEW members are not joining at the rate they use to..... for sure. I watch the " Newest Member " notification at the top of the page and it has been stuck on " Anchor01 " since July 21 2015.....and he never posted since.

The Newest Member notification use to change on a daily basis......back in the day.

But who cares......

There is no comparing Facebook with a specific topic web forum. Well run boating forums and other specific topic forums are growing or at the very least holding there own in spite of Facebook and other social media.

The by invitation only yacht engineers group I belong to on Facebook is great. But it is not organized topic wise the way a forum is. It's just not the same experience. Not bad but very different and can't compare. Or in many ways compete with a specific topic forum that is broken down into very specific sub categories.

The nature of life is change and adapting to new things and situations.

Years ago this site was great. A lot was different years ago. Certainly the internet has changed a lot.

I got incredible info from this site, and I met many good people from BoaterEd.

$20......please we all can do this.

Certainly the vibrant economy in past years was great for boating. This hellish downturn and not-so-great recovery has caused a lot of this. Boating took a hit for sure.

I'm looking forward to BoaterEd getting back to where it once was. BoaterEd is us-- the community of people who love boating.

I sold my boat this past January. Just too much money for me now. Bittersweet. I needed to sell. But I got no joy from the sale, as I miss the boat terribly.

But I'll get another boat when the time is right. I hold dearly all the memories and priceless time on the water with people I love.

There is so much more to do a share.

Let's start sharing.

Long live BoaterEd.

Sincerely,

Tom

I'm still here. I do miss George, Les, Vic and the rest of the old gang. And Boatfix too.

Les ......is still here ....I think

Well...I thought I posted here "So how doe we fix it?" regarding the posting drop off...I don't see it anymore and I also don't see any real solutions to bring things back to normal...
I am a supporter, been here a while, love the information, gained a few friends - everything is what you make it.
Never met Les, but thing he is a good guy, absente ownership or management rarely works out unless you have strong middle management.
So - are there any volunteers willing to step up?
Brand and reputation - need to be elevated as does membership services (customer service).
I have found this site to be a bit "clicky" which to me is OK but does on occasion discourage me from posting...this should change.
My bio is - 40 year old, boater my whole life, north east coast, small buis owner, do it your selfer, 40 foot family cruiser.
IMO - someone with a marketing background who lives the boating lifestyle should step in and moderate and take steps to change the reputation of BoaterED.

If it can't compete, then why would a closed FB group show far more activity than an independent forum that is open to the public? Of the 40+ separate forums in BE, there were only 3 I found (not counting NBR) that had any significant activity within the past 30 days. That doesn't say a lot for micro departmentalization.

Facebook groups can't be easily searched for information. Added to that I find it very questionable to trust anybody on an FB group. I can search here on BoaterEd and I trust the information (while it may differ from poster to poster) to at least be somewhat credible. Sure, there are a bunch of boating groups on Facebook (like Active Captain, etc.), but there's no "forum" there. A topic comes up, it's hot for a day or two, and then it is gone forever. I'm pretty confident forums like BoaterEd will be around for quite a while.

Britannia, let me see if I have this right. You're suggesting someone take Les's site away from him? Kind of like a hostile takeover isn't it. I want no part of that!

If you read his entire statement you would understand what he is getting at.

Where does he mention a HOSTILE take over ??

Greg, no not at all. My view of this site is from a business perspective, IMO Les may need some help turning things around...whatever direction would be under his guidance. It's his site and always will be, I bet he wants it to grow and continue to be the boater ED site. If I had time I would contact him and ask to help but currently would not be able to offer much, hands are full. But there may be somebody out there that shares his views and who has a strong passion for this lifestyle that is willing to help. Look at this place from the newbies view, I think there are some things that could be done better.

Why don"t we wait for Les to ask for help instead of butting our noses in to his business? Double D, I did read his entire statement before commenting. When Britanic suggests that someone with a marketing background step in and moderate and take steps to change---etc, etc. without Les requesting that, it would be a hostile takeover.
