My retort is this. 26 bucks to document your boat. Your documentation represents a recorded title among other things. You can't even record the title to a house for 26 bucks. Heck, 26 bucks is about the tag fee for an annual tag for your car in Georgia. It is one half the price of most state registrations. Most people burn 26 bucks in fuel before they get to the first buoy. I'll bet you have 26 bucks of beer on most boats. I'm willing to bet 26 bucks does not even cover the costs involved. Need I say more?

Whoa!
The $26.00 is to renew your document. It costs a lot more to initially document it or to transfer it to a new owner.
Renewal has always been free but documentation by the time you fire up the "Documentation Lady" to do it for you can run several hundred bucks.

There are some very timely threads regarding the CG that helps explain this fee. With all of the costs involved in rescue efforts and the fact that the CG budget does not keep pace, where else can the funding come from? If you say "John Q Public", then you win the prize!
