Kurt we both know of a marina in Baltimore with a very high quality fiber backhaul circuit that won't spend even $1k to provide the RF transport of their quality internet pipe to their slip holders and visitors.

The last I heard they did upgrade from the Lynksys so that now the entire lobby in the office is covered :-)

As for your "backhaul" comment, I brought that up to a certain "app developer" you and I both know and he told me "backhaul doesn't matter". Kinda makes me not trust his app :-)

Kurt there are many variables that effect WiFi performance speeds. The primary must haves are the pipe to the Internet "aka the backhaul" and the AP type being MIMO and having 2 or 3 internal radios.
The ideal system would have a large pipe to the Internet and (1) 2.4GHz MIMO radio and (2) 5GHz MIMO radios (per AP).
Then there are a host of other conditions that contribute to the ideal WiFi system. However without a large enough pipe and not enough radio bandwidth either will severely limit the overall performance of the system as the number of users increase.

Mike, describe what happens when you get disconnected from the OPTIMA hotspot? How or what do you have to do to log back on?
How many OPTIMA hotspots are green and even yellow on the Networks connection page? If you hover the mouse/cursor over the signal bars you should get a - two digit number it's in dbm or signal strength, what is that reading of the strongest OPTIMA hotspot, if possible what is the reading on the top 3 OPTIMA access points?
If you try and log back on what do the 3 indicators read (Network Name)/ (Obtaining IP address yes/no?) and Internet (Yes or No?)
What process did you use to register the ROGUE with OPTIMA? How many devices are connected through the ROGUE?
Do you notice anything strange before dropping the connection?
If possible, remove and turn off your internal router/ AP, connect the CAT5 cable from the LAN side of the POE directly into a laptop, does the data session drop when you do this? Depending on the answer to this question and some of the above I should have enough information to point you in the right direction.
Thanks,
Bill

If your WiFi device doesn't have a Web browser, you can manually register your device by tuning to channel 910 and following the on screen instructions to register your device or by visiting optimum.net by following the steps below:

Locate the MAC Address for your WiFi device. The Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique 12-character identifier for a specific piece of hardware. To locate the MAC address for your WiFi device, consult the manufacturer or choose from the list of popular devices below.
PC
iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch
Android Phone or Tablet
Mac
Windows Mobile Device
Make sure your WiFi device is turned on.
Click here and sign in with your Optimum ID and password.
Select Enable new device.
Enter the MAC address for your device. Note: If you are using Internet Explorer, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX add-on before confirming the MAC address. If not, you will be asked to re-enter your MAC address for confirmation.
Select the device type (from the drop down menu), enter a friendly name for the device and enter your email address.
Click Submit.
When your device has been registered correctly, a confirmation message will be presented.

So any idea/fix why my device keeps losing the internet connection and then has trouble restoring it?

Mike did you try running just the LAN cable from the ROGUE's POE to a laptop and connecting? This might eliminate a problem with your router/ access point, if so does it drop or stay connected. The OPTIMA signal levels would also help I asked about.
Did you register the MAC ID of the ROGUE with OPTIMA?

If the ROGUE is properly registered with OPTIMA your devices behind it shouldn't be asking to be connected to OPTIMA. If they are asking or registering with OPTIMA the ROGUE can't be registered with OPTIMA, this might explain why your weather tab isn't working.
Mike give me some information I can't help you troubleshoot this without answers to my questions.
Bill

Mike if you will be around on Friday afternoon I can stop by and take a look. I have to be in Trenton at 11am for a brief meeting but then I plan to head to the boat.

Yes, I will be on the boat from mid-afternoon Friday

Question, does the RW maintain a list of hotspots with unique encryption requirements, that it will associate with automatically like my smart phone?

Mine doesn't but I will reconnect to the last connection and all the Optimum hotspots appear the same so as I travel it keeps reconnecting.
I have been up for about three weeks now without interruption that I know of.

Dan, the latest versions will keep 10 favorites and look for them as you move the boat. However The Cable Alliance doesn`t require this because all their AP`s use the same SSID and credentials. Where this can become an issue is if there are one or more AP`s with the same SSID that create a situation where there is no dominant AP.

Interesting concept! I hope to have time to stop by and check out Hogan's system tomorrow if I can't figure it out I may give you a call tomorrow.

Dave, start by separating the internal router from the ROGUE.
See if the ROGUE is registered.
I will be available for a call if needed. If II don't answer leave a message I will get back to you shortly.
I'm interested in what you observe and find.

Yes, I have 7.51 for the B/G versions. Richard warned me that some users have had problems upgrading. I've got two units and am familiar with how to factory reset the devices so I'm going to upgrade at least one of my Rogues next week. I just had an antenna problem and used both devices to try and narrow down where the issue is. One is on 7.01 and one on 7.31. There was no performance difference between the two. The only difference was the some minor graphics changes. As Bill said, if it ain't broke...

However, Dave, if you want it e-mail or PM me and I'll send it to you.

Kurt - 3 y.o Rogue, running 7.38. is it worth upgrading? if so, would you please send instructions?? thanks.

Gene,

I haven't had a chance to apply the upgrade yet. As soon as I do I'll let you know. Feel free to remind me. My next boat project priorities are changing out the two joker valves in my head and figuring out why my satellite phone isn't "seeing" the external antenna. We're headed to a cell phone dead zone tomorrow and I like to forward all my calls to the satellite phone.

Mike or Dave is the problem resolved? If so what did you find?

I got stuck working later than planned and the gate to Hogans marina was locked when I got there so I just went to my marina to relax and have a drink:)
Mike being the weather sucks today I may just be tinkering with a few projects so maybe I can stop be sometime to have a look.

Billy do you have any thoughts? My concern is as you stated if it is picking up a few optimum hotspots of equal strength is it possible it will drop the connection and if so what is the fix. My marina is only a short distance away and I don't have a problem. I used to drop more frequently but without making any changes it seems to have started working great and rarely drops at all.
