Rogue Wave question

Billy my boat is about two miles away from Hogan and I connect to the Optimum hotspots in the area and I'm not dropping connection. I just checked my cameras a minute ago so I have been up since last Sunday I didn't even log it into a site when I plugged the boat last weekend I simply powered it up and walked away it connected and has stayed live since. Is the newer equipment less reliable?

Thanks Mike when you were looking at the MAC ID did you notice if the unit was setup for a static IP or Dynamic? It`s on the same Settings tab and area the MAC ID is located.
 
That means the unit`s in Dynamic which is generally correct. I can`t get to Rich at Geo/ Wave on the weekends, I have his cell and will give him a few hours to get up.
Is there anyway you can give me all the settings under the Use Static IP tab on the settings page? It should show IP, Netmask, Gateway and DNS. I already have the MAC ID so I don`t need that Mike.

Wow that doesn't look like anything I have ever seen on my unit Mike.
Is either Dave around and connected?
If so Dave will you post the IP, Netmask, Gateway and DNS of your unit's settings tab when connected to a Cable Co public hotspot?

For instance when I'm connected to "The Cable Alliance" hotspots the IP is usually something like 10.0.0.90 or 172.172..20.20, the Netmask is almost always 255.255.255.0, the Gateway is a subset of the IP being 10.0.0.01 or 172.20.20.1 and the DNS is usually 75.75.75.75.75.75.76.76.

On the 1st page (Network scan) my EC unit shows the IP the EC is using for instance 172.20.20.20
 
Bill, 75.75.75.75/76.76 are Comcast DNS. A quick search for Mike's 10.240.205.161 indicates that may be a valid IP for Optimum DNS. However, a public IP address assigned by an AP? That makes no sense. Whois results for 25.249.126.177 :

Mike, I don't think you want to be connected to that AP. What IP address do you get from other APs you can connect to?
 
Or you're connected to "something" that is claiming it's an Optimum AP. It could be faked or could be legit and screwed up. Do you have other APs you can connect to?
 
I see that the 26.0.0.0/8 subnet is assigned to Cable Networks but could find nothing on 25.0.0.0/255 variations other than being assigned to the UK Defense Ministry like what you found Kurt. I looked at the RFC's for that subnet and could not find anything.

I think this answers the subnet question,
They are using CGN: Carrier-grade-NAT. The 25.0.0.0/255 space is not routed on the Internet, even though it's not RFC1918 space. It's used as internal behind the NET use .

The Ethernet Converter or AP should gets it's IP assigned by the AP it should be Dynamic for Optima.
By the way last time I was up Optima territory they did use 10.0.0.0/255 doing some research I have heard that's changed.
 
Bill, could that IP address (25.249.126.177) be CGN (Carrier-grade-NAT) and not routed publicly? That would explain it.

FWIW - I just attempted to upgrade my Rogue's firmware to 7.51 and bricked it (Richard said to give it 20 minutes, I gave it an hour). I will have to await files and instructions from Richard on Monday.

Some hotspots do not automatically issue an IP address, they expect you to set an IP manually (set a static IP address). You may on rare occasion be given IP settings by the Marina to connect to an Access Point. They are entered using this button. Do not use this feature unless you are instructed by marina personel or your dealer.

Current Settings are:

IP address: 25.147.23.152
MAC address: 24:A4:3C:AA:C8:05
Netmask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 25.147.0.1
DNS: 10.243.255.72 10.243.255.73
 
Static IP settings would likely only be required on a private network. Something public (like Xfinity/Optimum/CableWiFI) would issue dynamic IPs.
 
Mike public hotspots issue dynamic IP`s usually only private locked down AP`s use static IP`s that would be given to you by the network admin.
Mike what IP is showing in the lower left corner of the ROGUE Network's tab when you are connected?

Mike the settings you now have are fine, the other initial settings were not good.
 
Dynamic IP - Issued by the network you are connected to. Most common as this does not require the end user to do anything.

Static IP - End user must be given a unique IP address along with Subnet, gateway, and DNS entries. This makes things complicated and is rarely used.

Mike, can you connect with your table/laptop/device directly to the Optimum hotspot? If so, does it work any better?

How about giving us the IP on the ROGUE Networks (1st user tab) page it is a small font in the lower left corner at the bottom of the page, you may need to scroll down past all the APs on the list when you are connected.
 
Dan might be able to dive deeper into this he`s really awesome with Wireless routing. I have to go to a family event shortly. Now I`m remembering why I liked boating so much....
