Trojan 440 Upgrades, Fixes and Ideas

After a two week hiatus I will be getting back at it again this weekend. I have been looking at pictures of trojans and I think I have found anouther issue with my anchor locker. The only drain IS to the bilge. Looking at pics of mine from various angles, I can not see any through hull discharge. Looking in my forward bilge I see an approximate 3/4 inch hole/tube the goes up to the anchor locker dead in the middle. Looking at pictures of other trojans I see where I think the though hull is for the anchor locker drain. Anyway Rather than punch a hole in the boat I plan to attache a 5/8" ID hose from that drain tube in the forward bilge and go to the shower sump. There is an extra line connection there I can use. That will discharge all of the rain water. At a later date I may put in a through hull in the anchor locker as well.
 
When the previously owner of my boat purchased it it had two through hull drains HOWEVER they were 4 inches too high from the bottom of the anchor room, he had Trojan send someone to fix it. I sealed the tube that runs from the anchor room to the forward bilge with foam but it is still getting water. And the list go on...
 
Plugging thee hole was my unoriginal thought until I figured out there is no other drain.

That's weird though to not have the drain. I think they probably forgot :-)
At some point I want to get bigger through hull so it drain smoother.
 
Just remember that hole is fairly low already. If water can get out easier, it can get in easier in rough seas. That is why I am contemplating not putting the through hull in and just leaving a hose connected from that drain to the sump.

I have no issues with water on my radar arch however it is not the winged version. I think your radar arch needs to be tilted back and then have the camper top attached under the arch. Normally Bimini go over and campers go under.

For the anchor locker water removal, I have two drains, one on the port, one on the starboard. They work great especially when cleaning the anchor rhode with the pressure water. They are located just above the bottom of the locker.

I too am replacing my slide out seat cushion vinyl, however I am doing it myself.
 
Is your slide out (this is for all replacing theirs) cushion starting to come apart at one of the seams? My stitching is starting to let go. I really need all new cushions but I am hoping to get another year our of the ones I have. My wife is going to attempt to sew them for us and I will install. I just have way to many other projects going on right now.

I have a guy coming by tomorrow to look at the canvas. I will let you what he says.

Just so you have some idea i paid for my full camper $5600. They also had to do the frame from the arch back because previously it was dropping from the arch to the back of the boat.

Yes mine is ripping at the seam. All Trojans will do this when you have tie ups and people walk back and forth across the boats. This is what happened to mine.
 
That is likely what was causing mine too. We have not walked on it since buying. When ever we need to go out on deck we use the other side. But it is only a matter of time before it comes apart. My wife, who is pretty handy with sewing, is saying she would like to take a shot at doing the upholstery. Maybe next winter we will start with the interior stuff and see how that goes. Outside, pretty much all of it needs replacement. I had a quote of $7500 and decided it was not that bad yet.

I did get more work done on the interior again today. The waste lines are done on the inside. I just need to finish the connection to the pump out fitting in the engine room. It is to cold at the moment to get the bends just right. So instead I worked on getting the underlayment down. This is the progress I made this weekend.

I am cutting the underlayment for the hatches first and then building the rest of the underlayment around that.

I have a long straight line that you can not really see down the center of the boat that lines up with those hatches and I am taking all the measurements off. So far I have 5 of the hatches cut out. There will be a total of 8.

Each of the hatches will be edged with 3/8" furring strips. That is the thickness of the bamboo. I laid a few pieces out first to see if that would work.

I have not been on my boat since I covered it Thanksgiving weekend.
 
Wow you are rebuilding the entire boat! I have to get busy with my projects I haven't started anything yet I thought about it a couple of time but that's as far as I have gotten.
 
I'm thinking about going to Aruba in two weeks.
 
In two weeks I hope to have all of the sub-floor in.

Hogan you suck. I would love to say I am going to Aruba in two weeks. I think we are finally looking at next year for a vacation to a Sandy Beach somewhere. Maybe VI.

In all that above I forgot to add what the canvas guy said about the arch. No way to fix it.

He says what is happening is the water is rolling off the back of the arch and wicking back inside the canvas. Leaning it forward would have it do the same thing from the other direction. If the wing tips where not there he would recommend attaching the canvas on the top of the arch and around the sides. Probably like Bob has. With the camper cavas I rarely take my canvas off now. I am considering an extreme fix (or attempt) If I mask both sides, leaving a small hole, I can inject foam into the space and fill it so water can not wick back and come in. I believe this expanding foam is paintable so I would be able to paint it white. Still debating this though.
 
I disagree John. Tilting the top of the arch towards the stern will result in the water running off to the aft. With the aft canvas attached to the bottom of the arch, the water will roll down the canvas and off the back of the boat.

I am convinced this is the only way to fix the problem. When I do it, I'll let you know.
 
I do want to see how that works for you. If it does work, we will all be doing the same thing. Do you think it will effect your radar?
