Watch Hill Update Post Sandy

Dave, be careful when you come back, with this strong NW wind the tide has been extremely low. Definitely want to time your return for close to high tide. If the wind lets up later might be closer to normal tomorrow but yesterday was very low and looks like it will be again later.
 
We stayed put. Leaving tommorow at high tide.
The work boat here has hit 2 fish traps in the channel but he drafts alot when loaded up
 
I was out at the air show all day and came back to the AYC around 6:30 and was turning up mud most of the way to my slip (I draw just over 3'). I spoke to one of the Sea Tow captains and he said the bay is very low and people have been touching/running aground all day. Now that the wind has finally stopped, hopefully tomorrow will be a bit better.
 
So here is the Watch Hill update after spending the weekend there:

- A Dock has no power.
- Park Service have Day docks blocked off so no day docks and no access thru there to nature trail or beach.
- Bay beach stairs are wiped out
- Beach to stairs closest to Davis are closed and wiped out.
- 2 boats can't pass at entrance. I touched going out when guy coming in swung wide and pushed me out.
- Electric is flaky as alot of panels are taped up and not working.
- Work boat has hit 2 fish traps in the channel so far and pulled up alot of wire and line!

Can you get to the bay beach? If so is it pretty much the same as before or not much left of it? What did the ocean beach look like?
 
You can get to bay beach but stairs are out.
Bay beach looks the same.
Ocean side the beach is about 10 feet below where it used to be.
They built a very large like circular staircase to get down from boardwalk.
Sand is not great, very hard. Alot of debris on the beach.
Looks like it's missing about 6 feet of sand!
Took a nice 1.5 mile walk to see the Bessie White wreck from 1919.
 
I went out for a while this afternoon right after high tide and the wind, while not as bad as yesterday, was blowing pretty good. The tide was lower than a normal high tide when we left the dock, and the bay was fairly choppy.
One of those days that I kind of wish I was up on a flybrdge instead of feeling the cold salt spray.
We took a pretty decent ride west through Massapequa, down to Zacks Bay, and came back up through the Amityville Cut. Traffic was kind of light for a holiday.
The depths overall weren't as bad as I thought they would be. There was some real shallow spots between the last Wantagh Bridge and the entrance to Zachs. Especially on the south side of the channel. It was also a little shallow up at the north end of the Amityville Cut, but I think it's always that way in the beginning of a season.
I did see a decent size boat getting pulled by TowBoat US in to the channel from the east end of Zack's. I see a lot of people use that as an entrance/exit. Mostly smaller boats. I wouldn't do it on a good day, and this boat was bigger than mine.
I'm kind of glad that I got back a couple of hours before low tide because it looked like it was going to be a lot lower than normal.
Hopefully everything will get back on track soon.

Has anyone gone to Davis Park Marina? Thinking of going there this weekend and want to make certain no problem getting in and out of the marina. Also want to know overall condition of the docks, boardwalk and beach in general.
 
Walked over from Watch Hill last weekend, all looked fine.
 
Check the forecast before going to DAVIS & SAILORS . That place can ROCK AND ROLL !

Guys,
Any new updates... Hearing a lot rumors out east about the ferry having trouble getting in. People are grounding in the channel and the mosquito's are out of control.

I hear its great.
20' in channel
No mosquitos.
Clams jumping out of the water already marinated and steamed!
Palm trees gowing.
Hot naked women on the beach.
Oh and free drinks in bar every night!
Day docks have electric, soft cushioned poles, floating docks and crystal clear water!
