Hurrican Irene Headed Our Way!

When my Dad had a boat in FL, they would take them out and anchor behind an island in the Indian River and then dink back in. The only time he ever had any significant damage was when he was in the marina, not anchored out.

Looks like its not going to affect the east end as bad now, that is good for Rob.

Mark,
A guy left the marina in a Tiara today to go to hemlock cove to weather this out there.

My boat is a secure as I can get it now. There are two lines to poles on the opposite side of the canal running one each to a forward and aft cleat on the starboard side of my boat holding me about 4 feet off of my bulkhead, and I've got 8 lines running from pretty high up on the 5 poles along my bulkhead securing the port side of my boat to my side of the canal. The neighbor that helped us out with his little Whaler had to come get my daughter and I off of our swin platform so we could get back up on the dock. It was just a little too far to jump.
I even tied a couple of lines around my shed and tied it off to a utility pole so it won't wind up somehwere in the Amityville Cut when this is all over.
Cancelled the job I was supposed to do in Brooklyn tonight. So I'm ready for it!
My wife got called in to volunteer at a shelter at the High School tonight. I sure hope she doesn't get too drenched out there.
Update: High Tide Tonight.

Looks good John.............thats about the best you can do.............Good Luck

Anyone up?
Getting pummelled on north shore.
I see a tree branch down in fron yard.
Lot of heavy rain. Winds are not bad but I am sure they will get worse.
Any south shore reports?

Just checked on things Dave. Wind is not too bad. Boats are bouncing a bit. The water came to about the top of my dock last night at the 9:30pm high, then went down a few inches, it's edging back up now. I'd say it's currently about 12-15 inches above a normal high tide. I'm sure that's due to the east winds and not to storm surge since the thing is not here yet.

I had one issue, at 2am I had to leap onto my bow rider because the support pole slipped down and the cover had a bunch of water in it. It's fine now. Next storm, the telescoping pole gets replaced with a piece of wood. But apparently we're not getting a lot more rain from this one so I'm not too worried about that.

Going back to sleep now...

Thanks for the update.
Staying awake now.
TV is out.
Watching tv via internet!
Gonna try to drive down to boat around 9AM if wind dies.
Based on what I see out front door, their will be alot of chainsaws buzzing tommorrow!
I needed more firewood!

Could not sleep much all night... Got 2 TV's on and a tv iPAD app, and 3 computers running storm profiles. Winds are picking up and the brain is getting tired.

Water is over my dock and halfway up the back yard, I'm going to say about a foot and half above a normal high.

Ron,
Keep the reports coming! If winds die I may go to boat!
Thanks.

Dave

I have been using this website since the data is realtime.

http://lishore.org/l12/latest.htm

It shows water at 1 foot, which I guess is above normal, so 1 foot above. That fits with your 1.5 above normal.
The high water is 4.1 which is higher than it was last high tide, so it's going up.
Watch this until 9 when I think full high tide will be in lindenhurst.

Im heading to pequa now. Water i hear is over dock and a few feet away from the house. Anyone need me to check on their boat just let me know. Phone is going to die going to charge in car. No power here in long beach.

Dave,

Dont beleive that website. At 8am it indicates a falling tide, not so. Water is still coming in my driveway & backyard. Do NOT come to the south shore until after 10.

Andy

water is moving fast right now . its really piling up.

Hope everyone who has a home on the water comes out ok. I am a little worried about the boat. I think I may have tied her up to tight with not enough slack in the lines for the surge. When I tied her up friday I did it near high tide. Nothing to do now but wait.
Al

My worry is boat getting above the rub rail on the poles, then I will be gelcoat on pole!
I figure water has to rise 3 feet above the land for that to happen.
Around that time the boats on jackstands will be floating off their stands.
I will wait till 10 now, wind is still blowing here but if you look at radar it stopped raining in Lindenhurst
