Can someone help us? My family and I are looking for a good marina off the Chesapeake. We are fron NJ so we dont want to make the commute too far. we have it narrowed down to Skipjack Cove on the Sassafras and Great oak landing (jellyfish Joels place)... We do have 3 children, Does anyone know anything that can help us... Maybe you know a better place?
Thanks for helping

We were at Skipjack for many years and have visited Great Oak on several occassions. I can tell you that while SJC has some negatives we do prefer it over any other marina on the Eastern Shore within easy reach of I-95. The negatives for SJC are that its 7 miles by water from the Chesapeake and the service department is expensive. The pros are that the Sassy is (IMO) the prettiest river on the Upper Bay, their are many places on the river to anchor out safely for the day or the night, fresh water (most years!), SJC has the cleanest air conditioned and private bathrooms on the Bay, the grounds are kept very clean and maintained and the staff is helpful. If you have kids there is the pool, horseshoes, tennis, basketball and a dog walk area.

The pros for Great Oak (IMO) are that its close to the bay by water and its a well kept marina. The cons (IMO) is that its too big, the Creek is a party scene every weekend (and not necessarily "kid friendly") and the entrance to the creek can be a challenge at times.

Let me know if you have any more questions about SJC and I'll be glad to help you.

We liked SJC it just seems so far by water to get anywhere( Baltimore, Annapolis) My wife and I like to kick back and throw down a few cold ones on the boat. We were a bit worried that SJC may be too tame. This is out 1st year with our new boat 320 Sundancer and were clueless on the place to be

I second what Mike said. I am at Skipjack and it is a great facility. Like everything else, it has its drawbacks. This is my fourth marina and I think I will be staying for a while.

I don't know about too tame. I am on "C" dock and it is known as the party dock in the marina.

We actually have a slip on reserve on "C" dock slip # 30... Are there any beaches or is Turners creek accessable with a bigger boat?

There are quite a few beaches up and down the Sassafras. Also, Still Pond is just off the Sass with lots of beaches. You can get your boat into Lloyds and Turner creeks. Lloyds is a little bit trickier but I don't think your 32 draws too much.

Sounds great. Being on the Sassafras... How far is it to places like Annapolis, Baltimore ect... SkipJackCove was a clean place and seemed well cared for. What is the age groups there?
We were considering great oak because it appeared to be a younger crown and a happening place
Any other places we should consider?

Yeah, C Dock (C-7) was our home for a long while until we upgraded the boat and got "kicked-up" to B Dock. C Dock is the party dock, particularly "lower C" where there's a cast of real characters who keep the beer cold and... well, ther beer cold. Chuck & Sue, Jack and Sandy, Rick & Jane, Joe and Linda.... well, there's a gang there that is very friendly and always ready to party as well as lend a hand when needed. Since you have a new Sundancer Chuck will immediately seek you out and become your new best friend.. he has an older 310.

I can't say for sure what your cruise time to Annapolis or Baltimore may be but for us that wasn't as important as having places close by to drop a hook for a few hours or overnight on a nice Saturday or Sunday and there are plenty of those within easy reach of SJC.... plus your car ride will be 30-45 minutes shorter than gettin to Great Oak.

Our favorite spot was Still Pond... so much so that we bought land there and will be building a home soon.

Julian: We are in Annapolis and travel at 18knts. GreatOaks is 22NM and we are usually about 1 1/2 hrs to there. To the head of the Sasaf. we are more like 2hrs.15min. As far as Balt. from there would be about 18nm from Great Oaks and about 25 from Sassy. Balt. has a long 6knt area which makes it hard to gauge time. Great Oaks puts you in the Bay right away, but the Sassy has some nice places to hang out if you just want to get out of the marina, but not go far.

I cant tell you all how much your imput has helped me. Like I said were new to the whole marine scene and you guys helped me make my decision. Im calling in and taking the slip on Skip Jack Cove. Seems like you cant go wrong there... and it is a really beautiful river. Im sure I will meet good people there that would be willing to take us to cool spots.
If any of you are ever in the area and its a hot day feel free to stop by for a cold one :)

Julian,

I think you will enjoy "C" dock. I am in C-36. I would say that most of the people who party the most on "C" dock are in their mid to late 50's. I've been known to enjoy a few cold ones here and there and I am considered the young one at 47 at the party scene. We are a fun group of people at "C" dock. Do you have any children? I have a 10 and 7-year-old girls.

Yes we have 3 children. 6 3 and 7 months. I guess we will be the new kids on the block. I am 42 and my wife is 31.
That was our biggest concern.. We just want to fit in and maybe have something in common with the people around us. Maybe the late 50 people can bring thier kids :)

"Maybe the late 50 people can bring thier kids"

What, you looking for babysitters??!! ;)

Or main concern is fitting in. I know were a younger couple and the last thing we want is to have any issues with talking too late on the back of the boat... you know sometimes laughter and talking carries on the water. I also dont want to have to shut it all down at 11pm and go in the cabin on a beautiful summer night

Julian,

You will fit in fine! We all have one thing in common and that is boating! As far as shutting it down, Skipjack shuts it down at 11:00pm if you are too loud anyway. We hang out until the wee hours of the morning.:)

Welcome to C Dock- We are starting our 2nd season there. Our slip is C7 and we love it. Age doesn't matter on c Dock. Our "organizer" for events and parties, Tracy, is in her 30's while most everyone else is in their 40's, 50's and 60's. There are many kids. Enjoy and we look forward to meeting you. Debbie and Larry

Larry... You have our old slip! Man, I can share some stories from the recent past. Tell Chuck to try and be a bit more careful this year... ;)

We just confirmed on C-30, Were looking forward to an awsome year and meeting many great people and interesting cruises.

Hey Julian. You mentioned you're from NJ. What town? We're Cherry Hill
